It's in Renfrewshire but not Glasgow as Glasgow is in Lanarkshire

Jim, have you looked at www.archive.org ?
there are quite a few Renfrewshire directories available on this site and some specifically for Greenock and Port Glasgow.   (19th century)
As Ann pointed out, Glasgow is not in Renfrewshire, but Port Glasgow is - just to confuse all us non-Scots!

Nice little mini history here : http://www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/greenock/greenock/index.html

www.old-maps.co.uk (http://www.old-maps.co.uk) has an 1859 town plan and other maps with coverage too.

Hi
Greenock is in Inverclyde. Renfrewshire doesn't go as far down the Clyde as Greenock.

Inverclyde is a modern contrivance. Greenock was in Renfrewshire. Glasgow hasn't been in Lanarkshire for about a century when it was made a city/county in its own right. Some parts of Glasgow, including north of the Clyde, were never in Lanarkshire and were formerly in Renfrewshire also.

Skoosh.

Greenock Port Glasgow and Gourock are part of Inverclyde
but this only came about in the 1970's not sure of exact year (to young to remember) ;)
for example.
Mr Anybody
? main street
Greenock
Renfrewshire
this is the way an address would have been written before the 1970's

It's in the council area of Inverclyde, in the Lieutenancy of Renfrewshire, in the former region of Strathclyde.

Also just about where the Firth of Clyde begins to think about a sharp left turn.
