Hi everyone
I'm looking for any information about my grandfather:
Name: Joseph Abner Byrne (76)
DOB: 27 June 1880
Place: Cork County, Ireland
Died: 11 September 1956
Place: Christchurch, New Zealand
Occupation: British Navy - approx 17 years 1898 - 1915
New Zealand Defence Force: 2 years - 1917-1919
1st Battalion - Canterbury Infantry Regiment and released with war injury in 1919.
Married 3 times:
Children: (*)
Emmigrated from Ireland to New Zealand - dates unknown
Mother: Sarah Jane (Horton) Byrne (1849)
Father: William Lionel Byrne (1845)
Both parents deceased and buried in Christchurch, New Zealand
Siblings: James McCall Byrne & Mary Byrne (unknown if others)
I cannot find any record of where in Ireland he was born. Despite my in-depth searching, I cannot
find any record of his birth, nor his parents existence in Ireland whatsoever, I have reached a block.
I have made thorougher searches throughout many of Ireland/UK/NZ archives, Census, Births,Marriages,
Deaths registries, Ireland National Archives, Parishes and the internet in general and still no joy. I have documents that state both Joseph and his parents were from Ireland, but cannot find once piece of evidence to prove it. My only shred of anything is the Byrne crest, which is lovely, however does not connect me to Ireland.
I hope there is someone out there that may be able to help me find the missing puzzles.
Any assistance would be much appreciated.
Kind regards
Essenes

Hi Essenes, and welcome to RootsChat. ;D
Archives New Zealand holds the Army personnel file for him, and as it has been digitized you can view it online.

I note that Joseph had children. Judging from the date you provided for one, some or all of them may still be living.

Hi again, Essenes,
Drawing a long bow here but might Joseph be the 'Sir J.A. BRYNE' who was in charge of the Irish Constabulary in 1920?
No, wrong man.
Added: In 1919 he married Marjery RUSSELL. No idea where.

Might be an idea to get in touch with the Christchurch Branch of NZ Society of Genealogists, to see what records they hold for your chap. It is surprising what little snippets they have tucked away.

You have hit the nail on the head, thankyou so much, this is the
information I have been searching for. Today I received the death
certificate for Joseph and as you stated earlier, his place of
birth states CHCH, NZ. Our family believed he was born in
Ireland because on his Military records, Joseph stated he was
born in Ireland, so this has solved a mystery.
May I contact you via personal message to discuss this further?
Thankyou so much for sharing.

When I saw the name "BYRNE" my heart skipped a beat as I have BYRNE brickwall.
My great grandmother Margaret Ellen BYRNE was born in Kingstown, Dublin on 23 March 1856 and married in Bradford, Yorks in 1877. On her marriage certificate her father is shown as Patrick Byrne and her mother as Bridget Byrne (no maiden name shown)
Like essenes I have been unable to track down a marriage of her parents or Margaret's birth or baptism records. Of course I had hoped that there may have been a family connection with that of essenes - it looks remote, if at all.
So I will just have to keep looking.
Cheers
