How possible is it to find out about an individual's political activities during the 1820s in Dublin? What records would have been kept? Any help would be appreciated?

I am interested in finding out about the kind of records that have been kept regarding a person's social/political activities. Claims have been made about James Thomas Leslie being sent away (as a Remittance Man) from Dublin due to his political activities and I am interested to learn how that claim was made. That is the reason for my question about available records re this matter. Are there court records, for example? Was he charged with an offence? Did he belong to a political organisation of which membership records are available? I am interested in finding out how the claim about his political activities was made.

Other researchers have an account of him being sent to Australia as a free settler by his father because he was a "rascal". What's your source for his political activities?

My sources about his political activities are other Leslies who have researched the line more comprehensively than me. However, the couple who have mentioned James Leslies' political activities have never cited a source for this claim. How was his status as 'a rascal' arrived at? Was he educated? Was he Catholic or Church of Ireland?

I've looked on Find My Past ie and searched old newspapers and couldn't find anything. He may have just been a difficult family member who was in danger of going astray and the father wanted to sort him out so sent him off somewhere where he would have to make a life for himself.
