Title: Southland .. Invercargill .. Lookups Cemetery Visits
Post by: New Zealander on Saturday 01 September 12 04:08 BST (UK)
Should anyone be interested I am able to do lookups at the Invercargill City Library and other venues for Newspaper Death Notices, Obituaries, shipping lists, immigration lists etc.

Likewise also willing to visit cemeteries both local and distant to photograph gravestones and check burial records.

Any requests can be sent by PM, e mail or post on here

A neice & nephew of my Gt gt grandfather, first cousins, married and went to South Island, NZ in 1859 on the ' Mermaid'
They were George Washington McGow and Wilhemina Hunter. (Mina)
A Google for George gives a potted biography as an early settler.  They had a large family, using the same family names as we used back then- Agnes, Helen, Davison, Hunter etc.
I would like to know if they were buried in Invercagill and if anyone there is researching this family & would like to share the history of this family pre-1859 in Scotland.

Good Morning Tanjil

The correct spelling of the surname is McGaw.

Your family members are intered in the Eastern Cemetery in Invercargill.  See this link:-

http://www.icc.govt.nz/ServicesA-Z/Cemeteries/CemeterySearch.aspx?CER_Surname=MCGAW&27670

There is a photograph of the gravesite available on the link as well.

Now there is a Passenger List for the vessel Mermaid in 1859.  The ship  sailed from Liverpool and landed at Auckland.  See this link:-

Specificaly I am unaware of anyone who may be researching this family.

If I can do anything else please let me know.

Many thanks for the quick response. Perhaps a later researcher may be able to take advantage of our combined knowledge & resources?
