Title: Gertrude Miriam Bilton
Post by: POCKET DRAGON on Friday 31 August 12 16:38 BST (UK)
Can anybody out there help me trace this lady?

She was the birth mother of my father-in-law's Dad, Basil Alwyn, who was adopted by the Randall family.
I'm very curious to find out more about her, even though by law we have no link to her any more.

All I have to go on is Basil's birth cert - born 12th Feb 1926 to Gertrude Miriam Bilton, chambermaid at 'The Horns' Hotel, Braintree, Essex. Legend has it that Basil's father was Gertrude's employer, but this is hearsay, and naturally no father's name is given.
I have no idea how old she was when Basil was born, or where she was originally from, but Basil was born at 700 Hucknall Road, Nottingham....which I have discovered was a workhouse at the time of Basil's birth - presumably Gertrude ended up living there when she found herself 'with child' - so I would expect her to be young, and clearly unmarried.

Can ANYONE shed any light on her?  ??? ???

She probably only went into the Workhouse Infirmary to have the child, not to live there. The infirmary, originally known as Bagthorpe Infirmary, was called City Infirmary from 1930-37, then City Hospital.

Thanks Stan.

All I have to go on is the cert, which says her residence at the time was 700 Hucknall Road.....
If you're right and she went there just to have him, was she likely to have been from the Notts area originally? It seems a hell of a trek to come from Essex to Nottingham just to have a baby...though I guess if she was trying to keep it hidden from her family.....?

I wish I could track her down.

YES YES YES!!!
What have you found on 1901??

All I've seen on the FREE index list is a Gertrude M Bilton age 16, dressmaker, in Islington. Other possible Gertrudes, but only one with M initial...though I've learned from experience that initials (or lack of) can mean nothing!!

Hello

I don't think the islington is the right one......this makes more sense..

Edinburgh St Cuthberts
County:    Midlothian
Address:    4 Brougham St
Ella B Bilton             25  Master mariners wife  b England
Charles V Bilton    4   son b Edinburgh
Gertrude M Bilton    2   dau b Edinburgh
Nora D Bilton    5 Mo      dau b Edinburgh

Ella B Bilton died Basford Nottingham 1962
Charles V Bilton died Nottingham 1967   m Langton in 1925
Nora D Bilton m (1) Carlin 1925 Nottingham
                         (2) Worsop 1945 Nottingham
                     died 1979 Nottingham

I'm sure you can see a theme here ............

more to follow

Intriguing!

I thought it would be the Islington one due to her working down in Essex before having Basil - I was just confused as to why she'd come up to Nottingham.
Now I'm confused as to why she'd go down to Essex to work lol!

In fact, where did you find this 1901 record for her?? The list I've seen has only 6 Gertrude Biltons, and none were born in Edinburgh - that's on 1901censusonline.com

I wait with baited breath for your next message!!

there is a tree online showing another child born 1922 ....Bernard Valentine Bilton ??

Miriam had further siblings ....

Valentine D born 1903 Grangemouth
Elsie S born 1905 Grangemouth
Phyllis Maud born 1907 Grangemouth

the parents were Ella B Ballan and Charles Bilton who were married in Edinburgh in 1899 according to the tree I have found...Charles Bilton snr died in 1908.....if you are looking for Ella in 1911 have a look in the Sunderland area; her two older children are in Essex at the Royal Merchants Seamens Orphange Wanstead ...if you google it it will come up with a rootschat thread showing how to get further information about the children. I think that is where there is an Essex connection ,

According to the tree Miriam had no further children but there are children from her siblings ........I suspect you are lokking at living relatives here

Charles was living at 302 Hucknall Road when he joined the army i 1916....

I'll see if I can find any records for her parents now.

It just occurred to me why I never found it - the census I was looking at is ENGLAND, not Scotland! Doh!!  :-[
I can only get 1881 and (at the moment) 1911 for free, so have to rely on helpful peeps like yourselves!

Sorry if I've mis-read any of the messages, but did Gertrude not marry at all then?

If what you've found is right, then Basil's blood half-brother only died shortly after him. Basil passed away in Scarborough in May 2004.
My father-in-law never really got on with his Dad, Basil - apparently he was quite a violent man and my dad-in-law was not at all sorry about his passing as he'd not seen him at all since he was about 18.
I'm not even sure how my dad-in-law feels about me chasing his blood roots, rather than the adopted ones - but I'd like to know a bit more about the family name that would've been mine if Gertrude hadn't given Basil up for adoption....

1911 free index

search for Ella B Billon b 1876 resident in Scarborough

search for Miriam Bilton b 1899 Edinburgh in Essex.

Getting a bit tired and my knees are a bit hot from the laptop.....if you want I will get the other census details to you over the weekend.

yes doran - loads of info online about the family and the Nottingham connection ( thanks to you ).

So although Ella put them in the school she obviously kept in touch and they all seemed to have set up home in the same area

Thanks so much - I have so much to look into - but tomorrow, as you say Nesta!

I can't believe you found Ella in Scarborough - if you saw my other post, that is where Basil died!!
Hallelujiah, have you both fixed it for me??

This does make me wonder though - if Basil went back to Scarborough because of the Bilton connection, did he have contact with his blood relatives???? I'll never know now.....

Ella B Bilton died Basford Nottingham 1962
Charles V Bilton died Nottingham 1967   m Langton in 1925
Nora D Bilton m (1) Carlin 1925 Nottingham
                         (2) Worsop 1945 Nottingham
                     died 1979 Nottingham

Just writing it all up and was wondering about the bmd records you found for Nora Bilton.
I've seen the first marriage record myself now, but can't see the later one - is this just a possible marriage, or was she now Nora Carlin, marrying a Mr Worsop? Is her death record then in the name of Nora Worsop?

Sorry to keep hassling you both like this - just trying to get it all right in my mind!

too right it would - thanks again.

Been looking at a Bilton tree on Google - I may have looked at it before as it seems to ring a bell with me.
It has un-nerved me because it shows Samuel J Tennant married to Gertrude M Bilton - but has her born c1912 in Nottingham!!!!! Can't get any more info from it - it's just somebody's tree, but surely they'd have got confirmation via certs and stuff before posting it on the web???

I've left a message on the link you mentioned about the Seaman's orphanage to see if I can get contact details for the man who seems to know all about it...hopefully I'll get a reply and can ask him what info he has for 'Gerty'

Hi All

This is Andrea, im Gertrudes grandaughter! Daughter of Lionel J Tennant. Im trying to find more info about her as she died when i was young, i think the info you have (that maybe flakey) is the info i was peicing together many years ago whewn i started this, i have taken it up again!

First! I had, but now cant find, my mothers and father marraige cert, this is where i got the info about jobs places etc, and im sure i retrieved from this that Gertrude was born in durham? no one really knows that much about her, i wish i could find this darm certificate as i have durham and everyone else has scotland. I have never once heard scotland talked about in the family, but do recall her being from up north west. Then again we had no idea either that she had so many eligit children either! shocker!

Secondly im looking for death certificate of her son (my dad) Lionel Jt Tennant known as Trevor my mum divorced him when i was born and me and my brothers would like to find out what happened to him, we THINK he died in germany, but it could be Amsterdam, circa 1980

Lastly since this thread was started a year back can any of the original posters help me shed some light please as im desperate to peice together this tree - and finally find more about my dad resting place.

Thank you

Just a bit of facts about Gertrudes sons,  after the two illegitimate boys, she met Samuel had lionel in 1928, then twins in 1934 Warren and Edward,( warren died by committing suicide in 1980, Edward died old age in 2003) she then had gilroy Charles. I remember Warrens death I was 8 it was a shock. My mum spoke fondly of all my dads brothers she also was deeply fond of her mother in law Gertrude who loved her grandchildren and liked to spoil us. She also warned my mum against marrying my dad!!!

I've recently started looking into the Biltons again for my father-in-law and have found a wealth of information...and even one of his relatives on Facebook!!! Please, please get in touch!!
