Title: James McGuffie McGuffock McGuffog
Post by: ivylea on Wednesday 29 August 12 13:39 BST (UK)
Hi, trying to find out more info about a James McGuffie born around 1740.

I believe that he married a Janet Muir in 1763 in Rothesay, Bute.

My research suggests that he was the master of a transatlantic ship called the "Clementine of Glasgow" that i have found a record of a voyage to Brunswick, North Carolina in May 1774.

This may have been one of the Walkinshaws ships (named after Clementina Maria Sophia Walkinshaw).

So far I think that I have found two sons, a James born in 1766 and an archibald in 1769 (both from Greenock). The latter appears to have emigrated to Haiti and may be the source of the various McGuffie descendants there. His family and descendants seem to have been involved in a lot of sugar and coffee trading with Britain and France.

many thanks
