Title: John J Thomas born 1850/1 Delgany
Post by: Nick Hill on Wednesday 29 August 12 07:53 BST (UK)
Hi Folks

New to the Ireland side of geaneology so looking for some help with the above person

Hi father was a Thomas (Hawke) Thomas and mother Ellen

they wer both English and I suspect they were in Ireland with either seafaring or coastguard work.

I have found a John J on the irish bmd site (rootsireland.ie) but was wondering if there is any way of checking the father or mother before I order a certficate?

many thanks

Nick

You can include possible parents names in the baptism search on RootsIreland - father's name matches Thomas, and mother's name Ellen for that baptism.  The baptism is showing in 1849

It's a Church of Ireland baptism so may show father's occupation..

p.s. the date is before the start of civil records - so that record is a transcript of a baptism, rather than a birth cert.

Many thanks Shane

so the roots ireland site will give an image of the entry or a transcript?

Nick

P.s. the link you gave was a conversation of mine about Thomas Thomas's life after Ireland ;D

transcript - Rootsireland dont have any images that I know of.

In addition to basic details i.e. child's name and date of baptism, a CofI record from this time should show father's full name, mother's first name (only), an address (although this can be quite basic), and possibly father's occupation, and also date of birth.

.....
P.s. the link you gave was a conversation of mine about Thomas Thomas's life after Ireland..

The link also showed that Thomas only joined the CG in 1852 - so likely not  in the CG at the time of John's birth in Delgany parish.

Many thanks Shane

there is a little confusion as there was also a Thomas Thomas who joined the CG/Navy in 1848 in Cork ::)

One had the middle name Hawke which should narrow it down a bit

How many Churches were there in Delgany and were they all CofI?

Are all the parish records still kept locally?

cheers Nick

Delgany is the name of the Church of Ireland parish where this particular record is listed, it's also the name of a town, you would need to check the baptism to see if a more detailed location is given for this family.

There was one operating Church of Ireland church in the parish during the dates in question - just east of the town. Historic records for most CofI parishes are kept in the RCBL (Representative Church Body Library) in Co. Dublin. Other than the transcripts on RootsIreland - I'm not aware of those for Delgany being available online elsewhere.

RC Parish names and layouts are different to those for CofI - the same area of Delgany civil parish would be covered by Bray or Kilquade RC parishes, depending on the exact location and dates involved.

That BT113 record mentioned earlier for the Cork Thomas Thomas show 6 years Navy service - but doesn't mention Coastguard.

As I understand it the register was kept as a list of potential Navy reserve - so I'm not sure if this Thomas was actually serving at the time of the ticket record - i.e. 1848

If he was a serving Coastguard I think it would mention that. (One of my ancestors appears in BT133 when serving as a Coastguard, and his address is given as Dalkey Station, also noted in the 'Voyages Out' Column.)

see from the CoastGuardOfYesteryear post that you found your Thomas on the 1861 census in Sussex. He's listed with his wife and a number of children - might be worth searching for a birth cert for one of the children born in England to establish Ellen's maiden name...

Hi Nick, Have only just read your post.  I have Thomas Hawke Thomas and family in my tree and have been wondering why first child, John J, was born in Ireland.  He is found with G/parents (Evans) on his 1st census...?1851.61?  I have the copies but need to get them out.  Father was coastguard, moved around South coast, then North, died Hull 1861 age 45.  Do you have further info on family?  My connection is through Joseph Robert Thomas (b.51/52 Lydd, Kent).
