Hi Roots chatters,
I'm trying to find out the first name of my gt gt gt grandfather. His surname was McCormick and he was a Sgt in the R.I.C. I think he was born c1800 and possibly came from Longford or Westmeath. I know he ended up in Ballycastle in the mid 1800s. He was married to a Martha McClelland. Can anyone help please?
Many thanks

do you have any details of any of the children of this couple - e.g. names, approximate dates, places of birth ?
A birth cert/baptism record, or even a marriage cert, for one of them might be a good place to start..

Hello Shane,
They had a son, James, no dob but I'm guessing at about 1830. He married Mary Lowe on 17 May 1866 possibly in Westmeath. Her father was John Lowe. I'm sure they probably had more children than that but I have no further details.

Maria Lowe married James McCormick in Moate, Co. Westmeath on the 17th May 1866. Their father's names were William Mccormick and John Lowe.
see : https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FG8K-SNL (extracted civil record)
A civil cert would give a little more detail - e.g. current residences for the bride and groom, occupations for the groom and fathers, names of two witnesses.

Thanks Shane :D

You can request a copy of his service records from the PSNI Museum for a fee..
There may be a number of William McCormicks listed - but maybe the Ballycastle location and approximate timeframe would help narrow down the list
Police Museum (PSNI) (http://www.psni.police.uk/index/about-us/police_museum/museum_genealogy.htm)
I know there are copies of the RIC service records in Dublin - and National Archives in Kew, and FamilySearch/LDS have films also.

Both James & William were described as "farmers" in the church record. The witnesses were Sam Lowe and Richardson Castleton.
