Title: Sarah Jane Lawther McAlister
Post by: DarrenMW on Monday 27 August 12 19:04 BST (UK)
Hi all, I hope this is the appropriate location to post this request for direction/help/info.

I am trying to locate anything at all about this lady.

I believe she was b. Templepatrick, Antrim  2.2.1872 to Thomas and Jane (nee Boyd) McAlister. I believe parents married 1858 in Belfast.

Im very keen to learn anything about her parents or further back generations, as well as where the middle name 'Lawther' came from. it seems very specific and unusual.

Also what became of Sarah Jane?

Sincere thanks in advance for your time and guidance.

 :)

Why do you believe now parents married in 1858?

IGI Family search
Thomas McAlister b. Connor, Antrim abt. 1838
Janet Boyd b. Connor, Antrim abt. 1842
married in Connor, Antrim . 1863

Hi Aghadowey  :)

I have been away a while so decided to start from the beginning again, as i have a tendency to run before walking. On IGI I find a marriage for Thomas McAlister (Fthr William) and Jane Boyd (Fthr Malcolm) for 19.7.1858 Belfast.

I am certain that Jane Boyd is correct.

Im still having trouble determining what is submitted vs what is extracted, but this record was from the marriages records.

Thanks again!

Presumably you know about the parent's marriage in 1858 (Thomas' father William McAlister, Jane's Malcolm Boyd) and the siblings Malcolm (1864), unnamed (1866) Jennet/Janet (1869), and Thomas (1875), all courtesy of familysearch?

Aghadowey,

I am confused.

The details originally provided showed an IGI record of a 1863 marriage in Connor, Antrim which makes perfect geographical sense.  I can no longer see that record?

I find an 19 July 1858 marriage in Belfast between parties with the correct names, Thomas Mcalister and Jane  ( Jennet or Janet) Boyd).  Of added note is the brides Fathers name listed as Malcolm, which is the name of their child. Coincidence?

I'm not sure if the 1858 couple are simply a red herring with the same names.

I'm so confused  ???

Thanks,
Darren

The 1858 marriage for Thomas McAlister and Jane Boyd is still in LDS database-
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FGZS-7B4
I found it by just entering their names into the search boxes and it was the first result. The results after that were for their children.

Thanks for the swift reply.  :)

The confusion was regarding the 1863 marriage listing in Connor.

"IGI Family search
Thomas McAlister b. Connor, Antrim abt. 1838
Janet Boyd b. Connor, Antrim abt. 1842
married in Connor, Antrim . 1863"

"IGI Family search

Janet Boyd b. Connor, Antrim abt. 1842
married in Connor, Antrim . 1863"

Before I even search for that one I'd be fairly certain it's submitted- LDS (software?) seems to make groom 4 years older than bride  :-\

Sure enough, found with no problem under Submitted trees- since the site was re-done the submitted details are separate from extracted information- on page 1 of search results just scroll down past 1853 marriage and children...

Oh thank you, that makes sense.

So the ones on inital search results on IGI are now extracted, or more trustworthy? I know previously it was a mix of extracted and submitted.

To finalize, I should lean heavily towards the 1858 result over the 1863 one?

Thank you sinverely Aghadowey for all of your help. You have been very kind. :)

Sarah Jane Lawther McAlister was my great great aunt. I don't know the background to the name Lawther. It might relate to a family friend or neighbour which would have been quite common practice at the time. She was unmarried with one daughter Jane (Jean) b. C1906 who married John Tyrrell but had no children. Sarah had 4 siblings. Her grandfathers were William McAlister and Malcolm Boyd. I think her grandmother Boyd was called Jenny but don't know her maiden name.

Yes, Jane (or Jeanette) Boyd, from Connor, Co.Antrim, Ireland.

The Boyd name was passed down as a middle name in this side of the family.
