Can anyone suggest how I can find out more about an ancestor of mine who was Deacon of the Incorporation of Hammermen in Canongate. He was Robert BOOG/BOAG/BOG (1711 - 1766). I have sent an email (twice) to the address on their webpage, but have had no reply.
Many thanks.

If you can get to Edinburgh Central Library, they have various published volumes about Edinburgh. Check the index in as many of these as possible.
The on-line catalogue of the National Archives of Scotland has an entry in the Court of Session records for 1752: Robert Boag, cutler, Canongate v Thomas Balfour, surgeon, Auchtermuchty. Is this him?
Just look everywhere. Perhaps he will show up in the National Library of Scotland catalogue. The register of Sasines will pick up on him buying and selling property. The Register of Deeds might contain something. You could check bugess and guildbrother lists etc.

Thanks for your suggestions, which I will follow up. But I live in New Zealand so it's a little difficult to get to the Central Library in Edinburgh!

Hi ABoog,
Welcome to RootsChat, just like to point out that you need to make 3 posts before you can use the Personal Message (PM) system, people will not be able to message you as well. So if you reply to this, that will be second post, only one more required.

Hi tidybooks and ABoog. Good to hear from you, ABoog. Please do post again so that we can PM each other. I haven't looked at Rootschat for quite a while, so it was good to have a bit of activity on my topic. :)

I don't really understand how this website works! I hadn't heard of the term 'Hammerman' before, but I found your message when I was looking for information on cutlers in the area.

Dorothy G are you able to private message me?

Hi ABoog,
You will be able to PM Dorothy, look under her name at left hand side of message. Under Posts:13, are 2 small icons, click on the one on the right, that looks like a page with 3 lines on it. The PM system opens up,so you can message Dorothy. Hope tho helps.
