Hi,
I hope someone will be able to help me.
I am searching for information regarding a Rebecca Catherine Gravenor born 1845 in Bethnal Green, London and her husband Thomas Stephen Fuller born 1847 in Minster, Thanet who are my Great Great Grandparents
I know they married in Dover district in March quarter of 1866 and I have found them on the 1881 census together with their children. But it is believed that between then and 1891 they both parted ways, but I am not too sure about this.
Rebecca died in 1915 in Sept quarter 1915 in Bridge district, Kent - V2a P946 aged 68 - Family records date for death is 7/8/1915. But as a family it is known that she died in Kent County Mental Asylum in Chartham Downs, Kent. Ideally I would like to know more about her admittance there, but unable to get to a records office to discover more information. But also a census look up for her from 1891 onwards would be useful... just to clarify the details we have.
Thomas Stephen Fuller, died in June quarter 1899 in Thanet district - V2a P574 aged 52 - Family records for death is 12/5/1899. But as a family it is known that he died in Minster Union Workhouse, but I don't know when he was admitted. But I presume he will be on the 1891 Census there, perhaps with some of his children. Ideally though information on his admittance and possible children would be useful, however as stated I am unable to get to a records office to discover more information.
I would also be interested to see any details relating to their son William John Fuller born 1876 in Minster, Thanet on the 1891 Census. I know details about him from the 1881 census and 1901 onwards, just not if he was with his father or both parents in 1891.
I've tried looking online for any information, but have failed to discover anything and I am hoping someone will be able to help me.
With many thanks in advance and kind regards,
Natterjack

Thomas is shown as 'Neither employer nor employed'
There's a funny squiggle for Edmund & William which might imply that they were also Gardeners. Both were employed
No occupation shown for Mark

Thanks for that,
Ok, so I'm not going to find Thomas Stephen Fuller on a census return in Minster Union workhouse then.. as he died 1899. Is there any new details on the 1901 Census for Rebecca Catherine Fuller, like stating she is a widow?
I just wish I could get to Kent and to a record office to see about their admittance to these institutions. I can understand why someone could end up in a workhouse, but we only have rumours as to why he ended up there and also why Rebecca found herself in a mental asylum and it would be nice to clear it all up with the records. Especially when I don't personally see her as a lunatic, just perhaps a woman unable to cope with what life had dealt her. Hence the records may shed more light on the subject. Just wish they were online to find easily. Lol.
And how horrible, some of the children in the workhouse without their father, would that have been like an Orphanage/School type of thing? Were any of them still there for the 1901 Census or had they or any of them got out?
Anyway, thanks for all the work done. At least I now know that she was admitted between 1881 and 1891 and he was admitted between 1891 and 1899.. and hopefully one day I will find out more as to why they were admitted in the first place.
Again thank you and many kind regards,

Hi again,
I've just briefly looked up some information relating to two of the children.
Dora Fuller in 1901 became a servant - I know she later went on to get married and have at least one child - presumed still alive.
Kate however nothing is much known about. However doing a brief search I have seen a transcript that she was in 1901 in St Nicholas Parish, Chartham, Bridge, Kent at aged 12 and an inmate, born Ramsgate. But I can't see any more than that, so I was wondering if she was in fact in the Asylum with her mother?
I know pretty much what happen to Mark Anthony Fuller and William John Fuller, has anyone got any clues regarding Edmund Stanley Fuller born 1872 in Minster, Thanet?
I am also wondering what became of Charles George Fuller (their brother on the 1881 Census) born circa 1871 in Minster, Thanet and also another brother Clarence Garnet Fuller born circa 1874 in Minster, Thanet.
There are at least another 3 more that would be interesting to find out about.
We have James Nap Gravenor Fuller born circa 1886 in Thanet. Baptised in 1888 in St Lawrence. He died on the HMS Vanguard in 1917.
Also Delaport Yardley Fermain Fuller born 1890 in Thanet - we know he was lost at sea in 1941 - but not whether he ever married or anything.
And finally we have Robert James Fuller born 1891 - who also died on the HMS Vanguard in 1917 - but we do know he did get married.
However, I have not found a record a Rich Fred on any family information. I presume James N.G Fuller is the same James Fuller in the workhouse however.
I hope this is of interest and I look forward to any info or thoughts.
Kind regards and many thanks.

The Kate you found is in Thaning Home, Canterbury (noted as an Institute) There are 18 other inmates, all girls, between 9 & 14 years old

Especially when I don't personally see her as a lunatic, just perhaps a woman unable to cope with what life had dealt her
There have been many discussions about this on RootsChat. The terms Lunatic & Imbecile used on the censuses were not well defined, and not used in the same way throughout the country. Any form of mental illnes or even epilepsy could be so described.
There are cases of women suffering from post-natal depression being incarcerated and never allowed out of an Institution!

There is lots about workhouses on the internet - this will give you a start

Hi and thank you so much for everything, it certainly adds more to what is already known.
Going to read up now from the website about the workhouses in Thanet, as not come across that website before.
Many thanks and kind regards,
