Can anyone check out a burial on 28 Jan 1793 at St Michael Spurriergate, York.
The name is Margaret Fryer and according to the NBI she was 67.
As this is during the period of Dade Registers I hope there may be a bit more information available.

A photo of the grave here with 4 family members......

Note that the church is on a city centre street corner that has no graveyard.....

Bear in mind that it is no longer in use as a church, it is now the Spurriergate restaurant and shop, there are tables, carpets, chairs etc all over the place.

Thanks for the link to the photograph. The husband's name seems correct; but I wonder if he had been marriage before.
If the church had no graveyard would burials have been below the church in vaults ? The Margaret Fryer I am looking for had been married before and her first husband Amos Horseman was also buried at St Michael Spurriergate.

I sent for an enhanced picture - the stone is definately in the floor.
A check of the register would still be very helpful if anyone has access to them

The linked page suggests that the St Michael Spurriergate once had a churchyard, although, as other posters have said, it's landlocked now in the middle of the shopping area. York City Council may be able to help.

I went into the church yesterday and presume your photo is of Margaret & James Fryer, their 12 year old daughter, and the
son who 'lived respected and died universally lamented'. Francis Drake the York historian says the church yard was built over in 1736. However there is a very small part left which has railings and a locked gate. Within this are about 6 standing gravestones and a table tomb.
Having read medieval history at the university 40 years ago I am quite sure the church registers will exist. However the place I used to study them is now used for something else. If you can establish their wherabouts which I expect to be in York I can go and look for you.

Just discovered that the Borthwick Institute which holds all the parish records is now relocated in the University at Heslington, York.
-
Diana - If you get a chance to look at the burial record it would be much appreciated. I am hoping that there may be additional information as it is a Dade register.
The Borthwick is now in the main library building at the University.

Don't live in York anymore and leaving tomorrow.Couldn't get an appointment yesterday for the search room today. Don't know whether they do 'look-up' at all. Otherwise will contact you prior to coming here again.

Hi Sue,
I managed to look-up the burial entry for you;
Margt FRYER wife of James FRYER of Goodramgate late of Low Ousegate, died on Friday 25th January and was buried on Monday 28th January in the South Ile (sic). Aged 67 years.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for that - the husband is correct, and the age is about right; and there cant be that many Margaret Fryer's in york at that time.
