Joshua CLAPHAM died in Wellington in 1913 aged 90, so born c1823. He married Maria WILSON in Wellington in 1865, and they had eight children, seven sons and one daughter.
Trying to find his origins, did he come from England and if so when.
Was he a boot/shoemaker?
Could he be the son of James and Ann, baptised at West Hackney in 1824.
Thanks

Hi Ian,

This looks like the marriage of Joshua the bootmaker
1885/3805 Emily Kidd to Joshua Clapham
looking at this article in PP

Hi Ian,
Are you trying to establish which Joshua is yours? I see on the E/R's there are two Joshua Claphams, one in Wellington and the other in Christchurch, the latter where the 1885 couple are in the rolls for 1896 and 1905-1906

From a listing on cousin connect website :
Elizabeth Adella CLAPHAM b. St. Albans, ChCh. 1887 m. William Herman BLAKE.
Elizabeth's parents were Emily KIDD b. at Hokitika and Joshua CLAPHAM, born Wellington, NZ.
Joshua's father was born in England.
(Maybe the lister has more info to offer on Joshua senior ?)

Hi
Joshua and Maria CLAPHAM are both buried at Karori Cemetery in the Church of England section, plot 125.
Also buried in this plot is:
Charles CLAPHAM (farmer) who died c.6dec1892 aged 72y (b.c1820)
Joshua's brother?? If so, it's most likely that Joshua provided the details for the death registration ...
Could be worth a try?

Hi Ian
Further to Elli's mention of Charles, the Petone Settler's Database has two listings for a Charles CLAPHAM (same person), the more informative of which records that a Joshua CLAPHAM (along with a "Step. PRINCE") provided sureties for Charles' emigration to Wellington.
http://www.huttcity.govt.nz/
The passenger list for the "Oliver Lang" - arrived Wellington 1858 (bringing immigrants under the Wellington Provincial Government scheme) - shows a Charles CLAPHAM and a Rebecca CLAPHAM.
Hope this might be of help in linking Charles with Joshua CLAPHAM ?

Other baptisms at Hackney - children of James and Ann CLAPHAM
* Charles CLAPHAM - bapt. 2 July 1820
* Rebecca CLAPHAM - bapt. 15 January 1826

[Rebecca CLAPHAM m. William Hugh MacDONALD - 1863 :
Death: Rebecca MacDONALD - 1912 - 86 years (bc 1826)

The three of them might have come together as there is a marriage in 1863 I think in NZ for a Rebecca CLAPHAM.
Ooops - posted before I saw Lucy2 had mentioned this.

Hi Ian
The way I interpret the Charles CLAPHAM info on the Petone Settler's database (with Joshua CLAPHAM, Step. PRINCE, having provided sureties), is that Joshua was already resident in Wellington in 1858. [Not unusual for settlers once established, to provide funding to bring out family members from the "old country". ] ;)

Hmm ... remember helping out once, someone researching the CLAPHAM name.
And some of the records eventually found, had been mis-transcribed as ... CHAPMAN !!! :D
Might be worth a search through passenger lists using "CHAPMAN" or similar.
If the "pension application" (1899) info given earlier in this thread is correct, then Joshua arrived c. 1856.

Hi Ian,
Think we may be related somehow?? I originally traced my family history when I was in high school years ago and spent hours in the national archives looking through ship logs, property deeds etc... I gave all of the information to my father who has since lost it. Anyway... My grandfather is Stanley Keith Clapham, His first wife was Beverly Winifred Keats and they had 5 children (1 boy only) so not sure if he may be your Uncle? My father's name is Warrick Keith Clapham. I know we come from the Thomas Henry Clapham and Jane Clapham line. We are related to the Clapham's buried in the Bolton street cemetery. I am trying to trace this history again to record it and would love some help?
Kind Regards,
Shannon Bainbridge nee Clapham

Hi Shannon
Welcome to Rootschat.
I have researched the Thomas Henry and Jane line fairly extensively as it is my line and have not come across a Stanley Keith anywhere.
There is a Stanley Lewis CLAPHAM in the Joshua line who was in Gisborne, son of Joshua and Emily, born 1898 and died 1973. He was married to Audrey Edith SKELTON, who is also buried in Gisborne.
The NZBDM has a death for a Keith Stanley CLAPHAM in 2001, with birthdate given of 24 May 1929. Is this your grandfather? The marriage records have him as Keith Stanley as well.
Stanley Lewis CLAPHAM and Audrey Edith SKELTON were married in 1928, so it is possible that they are the parents of Keith Stanley/Stanley Keith.

Hi Ian,
Thanks for the info, yes that is my Grandfather. Do you have any other information on the Joshua Line?
Thanks :-)

Have not researched them too much, just to find where they came from in England.
Have their baptisms and parents marriage. Haven't found them on any census as yet.
If you reply to this posts I can send you a PM and exchange email addresses to send you things.

Hi I'm new to this forum and have no idea if I'm going about it correctly. I'm fascinated by the info I'm reading about Joshua snr and Joshua jnr Clapham. These are my Grandfather and Great Grandfather. I was born after they both were dead so have not met either of them, and actually have only a very sketchy knowledge of my family history. Is anyone still following then?
