Title: Searching for John Wood, abt 1880 , Bowhill
Post by: CarolineinSydney on Thursday 23 August 12 08:00 BST (UK)
This is a real long shot....
I have discovered a little hush up job in the family & I'm now trying to trace my real great grandfather
John wood in the 1911 census age 32 , coal hewer, born Bowhill listed as single, was a lodger at my supposed great grandparents home in Buckhaven.
Their names were Robert & Helen Bell.
Now, g.gran was widowed late 1911 & my grandfather was born 360 days later.
On his birth entry , John wood is listed as his father.
He left before too long as ggran married another chap in 1914. ( popular woman!  :o)
I can't find a birth for John. Can't find another census where Bowhill or surrounds is listed as birth place. Nothing calling me in deaths or marriages.  ???
Anyone out there have John in their tree?

Thx in anticipation.

From googling and looking at previous census Bowhill doesn't seem to have been listed under that name - it looks like the village grew up when the colliery was opened there in 1895.

If you do a census search in 1881/1891/1901 for people living in or born in Bowhill you get zilch.

The most likely person I can find is John Simpson Wood b.3/3/1879 East Wemyss, son of Henry Wood, Joiner Journeyman and Janet Simpson (who married 13/6/1872 Kennoway.

In 1881 they are in East Wemyss, Wemyss, 1891 same, by 1901 looks like Janet widowed and she and children living at 41 Balfour Street, Kirkcaldy and Abbotshill - son John 22 is a coal miner.

This John seems to me to be the only candidate for your John Wood and makes sense that he would be back in Wemyss in 1911 (with the Bell's).

John Wood b.1879 married Elizabeth Downie 6/10/1916 Kirkcaldy - he married from the same address (41 Balfour Street) as on 1901 census although I can't find the family there in 1911 (nor anywhere else).

Henry Wood died 25/11/1891 and Janet not until 1931 in Kirkcaldy.

Thanks Annette,  I had  looked at those names but I really like to have something more concrete before I adopt people :). Saves a lot of deleting further down the track ! I think this is likely to remain a cold case....
