Title: Royal Naval Silver War Badge
Post by: Kenike on Wednesday 22 August 12 01:13 BST (UK)
Hi
I have found a Silver War badge amongst my late fathers possesions. It has a number stamped on the back with the prefix RN. I found out that the records are now searchable on Ancestry so I typed in the number minus the prefix and got someone I wasnt expecting who appears to have not served in the Navy according to the service records. I realised I had not put in the RN prefix but that doesnt seem to make a difference.

Am I searching in the wrong indexes or is this actually the correct man and my Dad has random badges (not unlikely) or is this an individual who has not yet come up in my research (again not unlikely as I have only recently started on this side of the tree.)

The badge number is RN21096.

Does the prefix actually make a difference as I have heard that there are several batches of numbers with different prefixs or no prefix at all. Are they actually completely different numbers or could there be several with the same number, just a different prefix.

With Thanks
K

K its a RN  badge so you would need to check the Naval records ADM 171 series
I couldnt do it using just the SWB  number like you can on the other roll as it comes up zero match.
What name do you suspect it could be
SWB were individually numbered but there maybe one to a soldier with 21096 minus the RN prefix

Hi

Your badge was awarded to Holding AJ on 1 March 1918 - no service number was included on the roll, just the initials ACii, and I don't know what they mean.

Hi

Many thanks for your replies, and so quickly!
Ady - the roll information is very helpful.
Martin - That is the surname I was expecting! Thankyou! I shall certainly have to do some more digging now.

Thank goodness thought I was going off the trail there as the previous surname I had come up with was so unfamiliar!

Thanks again
