Have just discovered my 2x great grandmother's obituary notice - it states she was from Scarriff. Her name was Elizabeth Marie White born circa 1853 - father possibly Francis. She came out to Australia as a 14 year old and stayed with her Aunt in Melbourne who was the proprietor of the Great Britain Hotel. Can anyone shed any light on this family please?

bit of Geography ;)
SCARIFF, a post-town, in the parish of TOMGRANEY, barony of TULLA, county of CLARE, and province of MUNSTER, 8 miles (N. W. by N.) from Killaloe, and 94¾ (W. by S.) from Dublin, on the road from Killaloe to Williamstown and Portumna; containing 761 inhabitants. It is situated on the river Scariff, which flows into the picturesque bay of the same name, opening into Lough Derg on the Shannon, and might be easily made navigable from the bay to Lough Grady, about a mile above the town: the river is here crossed by a bridge of three arches. This is a pleasing little town, occupying an ascent from the river, and consisting chiefly of one main street: in 1831 it contained 120 houses, some of which are neatly built. An excellent new and level road, which has been lately constructed between Killaloe and Williamstown, chiefly along the shores of Lough Derg, passes through the town. Here are extensive oil and flour-mills, and a considerable number of coarse hats are manufactured in the immediate vicinity. Fairs are held monthly. A smelting furnace for iron was formerly in full work here.
In the R. C. divisions it gives name to a union or district, comprising the north-eastern part of the parish of Tomgraney, and the entire parish of Moynoe, and containing the chapels of Scariff and Knock O'Grady.
During the disturbances, in 1831, an encampment was formed on Shene hill, in the vicinity, which was occupied for two months by a party of the military.

there are 2 White families in the Griffiths valuations from that area.

From around that same time?

The Primary Valuation of Ireland (Griffith’s Valuation)
The Primary Valuation of Ireland or Griffith’s Valuation - carried out between 1848 and 1864 - is an important Census Substitute. It provides the only detailed guide to where people lived in mid-nineteenth century Ireland and to the property they possessed.
It is arranged by county and, within each county, by Poor Law Union. Each Poor Law Union is divided into electoral divisions, parishes (Civil Parishes) and townlands.
it will only tell you the name of the tenant ,,his landlord and a decription of the amount of land,,no ages or family relationships are shown,,i will post the 2 White tenants.

Thanks so much for all your help ;D

Seeking any extra assistance around the White family of Scarriff circa 1850. Is there any other way, besides the Griffith Valuation of potentially being able to learn more about who this family may be?

There is this website
https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/en/
Church records from NLI
It would be part of the Diocese of Killaloe
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roman_Catholic_Diocese_of_Killaloe
I always look for the oldest people in the 1901 census and track them.

Hi
On www.irishgenealogy.com you'll see the death in Scarriff in 1890 of a Frank (normally a shortened version of Francis) White, a Shoemaker, who died in 1890, age 70. He was married.

What a find! Thank you!! I wonder if this could actually be my 3x Great Grandfather!? Is there any advice I can search to potentially find out who his wife may be?
-
These are the names of the parents that appeared on Elizabeth's marriage certificate
-
Hi again
When Frank died age 70 in 1890 - in the Workhouse - he was ‘married’.
Two years later, on 1 May 1892 - also in the Workhouse - Rachel White, age 70 a widower died and was described as ‘Shoemaker’s widow’
I wonder if Workhouse records are available and whether you might learn anything new.
Kind regards

Hi
Had a very quick look at the Birth Register for Scarriff and see Frank and Rachel White registered their daughter Hanora in Jan 1854, so they may have had other children, but I haven’t time to search. You could continue the search on registers.nli.ie - choosing Scarriff - to see if this couple had other children….

Hi
See the 4th entry down for 1854 Scarriff Baptisms - which names parents of Honora as Frank White and Rachil Kean. Sponsors named as John and Margaret Leonard, also from Scarriff:-

Hi
With more time - I searched but didn’t find any more children born to Frank White and Rachil/Rachel KEAN (the same parents’ surnames as on Elizabeth’s cert).
As I don’t see a likely death nor marriage for Hanora, I wonder if she used the name Elizabeth and is indeed your ancestor. Certainly looks like a strong possibility.
Regards
-
LH, THANK YOU!
To have deciphered the name of Elizabeth's mother and confirmed her details is just awesome, thank you so sincerely - you've helped me break down a brick wall here, thank you!
-
Hi
It looks highly likely this is your couple, doesn’t it.
Kind regards
L
-
L, it most surely does - I've been searching this line for over a decade, cannot thank you enough!
-
On Elizabeth's marriage certificate, it states that her father's occupation is a SHOEMAKER!
-
Hi
Glad to have been of help after your decade of searching.
The fact that there doesn't appear to be any later sign of Hanora here in Ireland (as far as I can see) makes me feel she emigrated and is indeed your ancestor.

It is certainly beginning to feel that way!
Is there anyway of knowing when Rachel and Frank married? Do you think they are from Ireland also as I can't locate them anywhere!
