Title: Morrison / Dowling
Post by: Bikegirl on Tuesday 21 August 12 00:31 BST (UK)
Wondering if anyone can help. Have information given to me by a cousin for a marriage on 19th December 1855 at St Gregory's Roman Catholic Church Queanbeyan between  Elizabeth Dowling and James Morrison. Can't find any record in NSW BDM and would dearly love to get a copy of this record. Does anyone know where I can enquire to get this or find out more ?

Hi Bikegirl,

It is possible that the marriage date and place came from one of their children's birth certificates.  You would need to ask your contacts where this information came from.

They may not have married, but records of many events did not make it to the registry.  This resource at the SAG might be of use to you:

Historical indexes of the Canberra/Queanbeyan district Vol 4 : parish registers & burial records / edited by Patricia M. Frei.

29: St Gregory's (catholic), Queanbeyan: baptisms 1843-1920; marriages 1843-1857, 1856-1898, 1881; burials 1844-1877, 1937-1967 (selective)

http://catalogue.sag.org.au/fullRecord.jsp?recnoListAttr=recnoList&recno=8731

Why were their children registered as MORRIS?

Debra  :)

Perhaps Bikegirl can tell us the names of her James and Eliza's children, there may be two different families here.

There were thirteen children born to the Morrison couple with nine of them surviving.  The first eight children were born in the districts around Goulburn, Queanbeyan and  Braidwood.   None of the children were registered but the birthdates are taken from the records of the Catholic churches in the Braidwood area  (kindly supplied by the local
Catholic Parish priest).  As some of the children were born on the trek to Louth their birthdates are mainly estimated by place of birth.

James Frederick's Death Certificate gives his birth place as Wollondilly N.S.W. in 1828; family oral history makes him the son of a Scottish engineer.
It has been impossible to find confirmation of James' background.
Information given on the death certificate is incorrect; the children's ages, when checked against their marriage certificates are wrong.
The Birth Certificate for Amenda Jane (1872) gives James` age at 34 (ie. born in 1838) making his death at 83 (not 93 as stated

Children : Helena, Edward James, Mary, Twins - Emily and James, Louisa, Elizabeth, Robert, John, Edward William, Amenda and twins Alice and Thomas

We have very little on James and Elizabeth ( maybe they did change names - very confusing  :-\

Hi
Who was the informant on the death certificate of JAMES?

The information's accuracy depends on the knowledge the informant has regarding the deceased.

Errors and confusion are very common.

Interesting in regards to child Edward James Morris who died on 7/1/1859 aged 1 year and three months. The second child born to our James Morrison was a Edward James who was born 19th Oct 1857 and died (according to oral history) 1857 ???? unsure.  Our birth date and record of death date who put this child at 1 year and 3 months . mmmmmmm ?????

Does your James MORRISON's death certificate actually name his children, or just give numbers of males and females?

Ros - thanks so much yep this is part of my tree but alot of those details are not verified  ie : no birth, death, marriage certificates

Hi Debra  : Death certificate details supplied by his son Edward William Morrison. Lists nine children in name living and age but states  4 males and 3 females deceased (which is more than we know of) We have baptismal records for 13 children

Appreciate your help :)

Some of the names for births in Queanbeyan for Eliza and James Morris seem to match (but then others don't)

   1856 Helena
   1857 Edward J
   1859 Mary
   1860 James

but then there are
    1862 Ruth
    1863 Sarah J
    1866 Christina

Sorry if this is a red herring  ;D

   Ros

I was wondering if you have any of the DC's for the children of James and Elizabeth.

There doesn't seem to be too much on them in the BDM's either ???
(MODIFIED)
I meant to add that the children that seem to be twins may or may not have been. I is very likely that they may have have had a Baptism for two on the same day. IE If the records you have are Baptisms. It was not uncommon then.

Hi Ros - been checking and looks like those extra three do belong - would match the death certificate of the James snr.

Also it appears that the first 4 children were all under Morris ( Names, DOB, places, baptism records concur where the next appear to be Morrison but Mum still Eliza.  Rest have Morrison and Elizabeth.

Have requested a few copies NSW BDM so hopefully these will prove that James Morrison is James Morris and confirm marriage. :)

Thanks so much for your help everyone.
Neil - you were right - one set of twins were not twins- have found correct DOB  under Morris for that child :)

Are you aware that in NSW you can purchase transcriptions of certificates for $18 which is considerably cheaper than a certified certificate.  The transcriptions are emailed.

If you know then just ignore my message ;D

Hi Bikegirl,
I know this thread is over 4 years old but I am doing research into my family tree and it is linked to James F Morrison and Eliza Dowling; they are my 4th great grandparents. Did you manage to further your investigations? If so would you mind sharing your insights?

Hi there. Believe that James Morrison is the son of William Morris
BIRTH 1797 • Scotland
24 Dec 1827 • Sydney Australia
Register of Convicts' Applications to Marry 1826/1851 Extract
Elizabeth Price (1798–) son James Morris born 4 DEC 1830 • Goulburn NSW. Some of his children were baptized and / or married as " Morris" but died Morrison
Elizabeth was the daughter of William and Mary Credie Dowling, immigrants from Ireland and arrived in Australia about 1844
