Title: Old house next to Natwest, Parkstone Poole
Post by: super_naj on Sunday 19 August 12 21:02 BST (UK)
Hi, I'm new to this site and I'm afraid this isn't a genealogy question but I'm very intrigued about a particular building that was on Ashley road in Parkstone.

I grew up in Parkstone just off Albert road, I'm 25 now but I can remember a big old house opposite Lloyds bank, next door to Natwest on the site that is now the Madeira medical centre pharmacy car park.  The building must have been demolished in the early /mid 90s. The house was derelict the whole time I can remember, but I just wondered if anyone knew what it used to be or why it fell into disrepair, perhaps there is a photo somewhere?

Thanks for taking the time to read my query.

Suggest Poole library might be able to help, why not give them a try?

Thanks!

It occurs to me that the place to go, where full details of the planning application for the Madeira Centre should be publically available is the Planning Office of Poole Borough Council. Leave it with me and I'll see what I can find.

Poole Council Planning Office Ref:HIST85/23900 205 Ashley Road Application to convert existing surgery and house into offices with 12 parking spaces and erect a detached single story surgery with 10 parking spaces. Application received 17th June 1985. So, from the application I would suggest that the previous premises had been a long standing, possibly late Victorian or Edwardian doctor's house with integral surgery, which had become dated, Might be worthwhile looking at the 1985 papers or slightly earlier in the library for the death of an elderly prominent local doctor; or this post might jog someone's memory. Couldn't access any pictures with the planning application. For general information all planning applications made in England and Wales since local government re-organization in 1974 are accessible in this way. Sometimes a very useful tool for house research.

That would make a lot of sense seeing that the current surgery is probably in the old buildings' grounds. Thank you for all your help, hopefully more people will remember it now :-)

1974 Kelly's directory has Hatch G.  R.  LMSAA physcn. & surgn.

There is a large space between the G and the R so maybe one or two people.

So look for an Obituary in the name of Hatch in Poole between 1972 and 1985. I say 1972 because there is always a lead in time with postings in any directory, including the phone book!

Wow that's great, I'll get down to the library and have a look. It's becoming even more intriguing now!

While you are there take a look at the electoral register for 205 Ashley Road, will be available in the reference section. I would expect one elderly male, and one or 2 live in staff to be registered. Please post what you find on this site. Thanks.

Good evening

The house that was demolished was a Doctor's surgery. Dr Beattie & Dr. Hatch were the Doctors
They were my doctor's from about 1972 until at least 1982 when I moved away.
I think Dr Beattie lived in the upper rooms and his wife helped with the paperwork. They worked on a 1st come 1st seen system and always remembered who you were as there was no receptionist
I think they were invited to move to the new Medical centre at Mansfield Road ( not Madeira) but remained in Ashley Road. I presume it fell into disrepair when perhaps they retired. I think Dr Beattie died a few years ago and he was well into his 80's not sure what happened to Dr. Hatch
It was a wonderful old house, probably never having been modernized. I can picture it quite clearly, perhaps there may be a picture in a local book of Upper Parkstone
Hope this helps

Hi Janet, thanks for your reply, it's good to hear that you remember the building. I'd love to see a picture, I've scanned through all of the books I have of the local area (a bit of an interest of mine) and also looked on the Internet of eastbound views of Ashley road. The closest picture I've got is of the old Dorset bank on the corner of Albert and Ashley roads, unfortunately I can't find any from the other side of the street. I'll keep looking though, I'm determined to find one!

Good evening again

Unfortunately the building is probably just to far east to feature in any books
The only suggestion I have is Poole History Centre you may just get lucky.
It was a large square, flat fronted building. I was quite upset when I noticed it boarded up and then demolished when I happened to pass by many years later
Happy hunting

I was going to try the history centre, I've always wanted to have a look at what they've got there, but never really had a specific reason to until now. Although I don't live in Poole full time now, I'll have to pop in there when I'm next home. If I do manage to find anything, I'll post it on here.

Another thought, why not try the Dorset FHS; there are always several photo books of old Parkstone on sale at the meetings; one of them might cover the area concerned.

Good evening

I have just looked at some photo's from the Poole History Centre showing Ashley Road that are on-line,  but besides the one taken by the Dorset Bank (now Lloyd's) that you have already seen,  there is only one looking westwards from Madeira Road, so close but not quite. This is just a few of their collection so may still be worth a visit. Just one other place to contact perhaps is the Branksome Library that is now just a little further east on Ashley Road.
As you say one day a photo will turn up
Perhaps you could contact Dorset FHS through their Web Site.

I looked on the website, didn't see anything either. I've looked online for newspaper records for any mention of the surgery to see if there is an article with a picture, but to no avail. Looking forward to going to the history centre, they must have newspaper records there as well as the library.

I was able to call into Poole History Centre last week and I enquired about photographs of this house.
They have many, many boxes of photo's/postcards and these are being scanned onto their website as time and volunteers allow.
So it is a case of waiting and checking. I did not have time to look at any of the local books though.
