Hi
I hope someone may be able to assist me narrow the search for a member contained within my family tree. I am relatively inexperienced tracing family trees, and researching aboard brings its own unique challenges!
The persons name is Edwin Green b. 1875 in Berlin (Prussia). By the 1881 census he was living with his grandmother in Byker, Newcastle upon Tyne . I believe his father could of been Thomas Humble Green b. 1849 in Penshaw, Durham. After the 1871 census Thomas Humble Green disappears so I assume he is the father. For some unknown reason he doesnt return to England. I do not know who the mother is. Edwin died in 1959 in Barrow in Furness, Cumbria.
If anyone has any information or advice that could help me track down either Edwin (birth record) or Thomas Humble (marriage/death record?), I would be very grateful.
Many thanks
Richard

Hi,
I believe the Edwin Green you are looking for was my Gt Grandfather. He was born in Germany and was brought to Barrow in Furness after the death of his parents. He married my Gt Grandmother Elizabeth Kendall. My Grandmother, his daughter is still alive and is to celebrate her 92nd Birthday this Sunday :)

Hi green69,
welcome to RootsChat!
Here are the entries of the Berliner Adreßbuch 1876:
- Green, W., Kastellan, Am neuen Packhof 5
- Green, W.H.L., Ober-Ingenieur der Potsdamer Wasserwerke, Hallesches Ufer 22 III. 7-8
- Green, F., Schmied, Kleine Hamburgerstraße 12 H.
- Green, Schmied, Belle-Alliancestraße 77 H. III
A castellan, an engineer of the Potsdam waterworks (the title "Ober" had been in most cases a special honour) and two Green's being smith.
Civil registration started in 1875, the early paperwork is at the Landesarchiv Berlin:

Have you seen this baptism?
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/NXCT-L3D
Also, do you know who the parents were of the Thomas Humble Green (presumed namesake) born 1888?
Unfortunately it does not appear that the births/marriages/deaths of this family were registered with the British consulate (this was not obligatory). One possible route to confirm parentage would be to get Edwin's marriage certificate, and see how his father is listed. Hopefully there is also an occupation not just "deceased".
What was Thomas' occupation in 1871?

Great Grandad Edwin must have named his first born daughter after his Mother then :) Ida was born 1900.. a real character if my memory serves me correct :)

Possibly relating to this family:
Louisa Elizabeth Green b. June quarter 1876, Sunderland (fits with the baptism location and date)
Louisa Elizabeth Green, d. Dec quarter 1876, Hartlepool, age zero
These are slightly longer shots going off the deathplace of Louisa:
Ida Green, d. Jun quarter 1880, Hartlepool, aged 35
Thomas Green d. Sep quarter 1880, Hartlepool, aged 31
In this theory Thomas marries Ida (in Germany?) and brings her with infant Edwin back, they have another child, Louisa, who unfortunately dies young, and then both Thomas and Ida die shortly

- data to confirm this in the cemetery registers
A free search shows that Louisa (1876) Ida (1880) and Thomas Humble (1880) Green were all resident at Sunderland Street when buried. There was also an Edith (b. 1877 d. 1879). There are many other Greens buried in Hartlepool around this time but these are the only ones with address Sunderland Street, suggesting to me that they were likely a single family.
Ah, found Edith's baptism!

Why Thomas is only "Thomas" at death but has his middle name on the burial record I don't know. One of the birth certificates for the girls would give you Ida's maiden name.

Ahh had no idea that there was two sisters ... I did know that Thomas and Ida died within weeks of each other.
Edwin named his first born daughter after his Mother.. Ida was born in 1900 and was a real character as I remember from my childhood :)

I have had a call from my second cousin today who has done some research... I will be acquiring a copy of the tree soon so hopefully we will have a better idea of Edwin's life :)
