Hi Rosie,
Many thanks for that. It has thrown up a discrepancy though. I have ancestry, I can't make the other one work.
The George Henry I am looking for, according to Ancestry, was born 10 March 1931. His birth date is combined with his date of death on there so, I can't get at his mother's maiden name.
According to Woodhorn baptism register, he had a sister, Susannah, who in turn had a daughter in 1942. Ancestry won't turn up Susannah's birth neither. Baptisms in Newbiggin appear to be registered in Northumberland Central during that period. A puzzle.

from freeBMD Susannah M Armstrong, 4q, 1919, Morpeth 10b 1040. Mother's maiden name Hopkins.

Newbiggin was in Morpeth Registration District. Northumberland Central didn't come into existence until 1936. http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/districts/morpeth.html

Ancestry won't turn up Susannah's birth neither.
It is definitely on Ancestry, but they have indexed it as taking place in Cumberland rather than Northumberland.

Hi Rosie and JenB,
That seems to be the ticket. The information got through to the parts that others can't reach.
Thank you both very kindly for your help.

Hi
I've just seen this message and the Susannah you are talking about is my nan. The mother's maiden name was Hopkins. Just wondered why you asked and if he is part of your family tree as im having lots of problems tracing my Armstrong side as there were many.
