Hello,
I found my great-grandfather, Hector Joseph Crowest, to be missing from the 1911 census, yet I have found someone under the initials H J Crowest in a census for Claybury Lunatic Hospital. Are records held anywhere for this hospital that I can check if this is actually my great-grandfather and any details of there admission to the Hospital?
Many thanks,
Isaac.

Hi
Is he the Hector Joseph Crowest born 1861 Strand as per freebmd?
Have you viewed the 1911 entry to determine whether the patients birthplace matches what you know of Hector
-
Yes, thats him.
On the 1911 census entry it states that he was born abt 1862. The census dosen't include a birthplace for him.
-
It would seem to be him then as Crowest is not a common surname
-
Thank you :)
Where could I go to find out more about why he was in the mental hospital?

Hi
I have asked the moderator to move your post to the Essex board as members more familiar with the Essex area may be able to give you advice on availability of records
This may be of interest to you

Hi Isaac,
Unfortunately Claybury is no longer a lunatic hospital. It has been transformed into a rather upmarket gated housing estate. I don't know whether the records have been transferred to the local health authority (Redbridge) or the local records office.

I googled it, earlier records seem to be at The National Archives and later (after 1915) at London Metropolitan Archives, try this link

or search at TNA site.
The post caught my eye because I used to work at Claybury in the supplies office in the 1960s and still meet with a former colleague who still lives in the area and whose parents were both nurses there for many years.

Apologies for jumping in on Isacc's post, but I am also trying to discover why my grandfather was admitted to Claybury immediately after the 2nd world war. His name was George Collier and he would have been in his 50's - 60's in the 1960's when you worked there Scrabble. I know it's a long shot and that there were many patients there but I have exhausted every avenue, including applying for his war records, and nothing has shown up. Does the name ring a bell at all with you? Many thanks

Hi Lorri
I am sorry but the name does not ring any bells with me, it was long ago and there were a huge number of patients.
Have you tried emailing the Redbridge central library? I have had very good results from emailing librarians in the past.
Good luck, Scrabble

There are a lot of photos from 1893 of Claybury here:
