Have the name of Makemson with variations of Mekemson, McKimson, etc., supposedly of Lowland Scots origin, then to the Ulster colony. I know there is a current Makemson family in London but they, too, don't know their origin. Anyone know of this spelling?

I have only one Makemson on my family tree - Mary Elizabeth "Mollie" was born in Bridekirk, Cumberland in 1873. She married my great uncle Charles Simpson Tomlinson in 1895 in Cockermouth, also in Cumberland. Just across the border is Scotland so Lowland Scots seems to fit in.

Thank you for the reply. Your Mary Elizabeth Makemson is a descendant of John Makemson b. abt 1788, England who married Anne Howe.
This line in England was proven by DNA testing to be directly related to my line of Makemson in the US. Supposedly John's line was from Ireland.
Our Makemson's were from Scotland and later went to the Scots Irish Colony and, I believe, there are still Makemsons in that area. Then my ancestor brought his family of 7 sons & a daughter to the US about 1759.
So Mary Elizabeth is related to the Makemson family that now lives in London.
There is also another Makemson, living in Wales, who is of this line.
Just can't find any connection with the name in Scotland.

Hi Ann,
My Mary Elizabeth was born in Little Broughton in 1874. She was the daughter of William Makemson & Sarah Tolson, who married in Cockermouth in 1869. William was an engine driver, as was the father of Charles Tomlinson, whom Mary Elizabeth married.
