Peter Luke's  funeral notice
http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article38723818

I'm not finding a death or funeral notice for Mary Ann Luke  :(

You can search http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/ for newspaper deaths and funeral notices up until 1954-55.

For more recent deaths you can view this index http://ryersonindex.net/search.php and ask the volunteers for a lookup

Do you have all this Thistle?  Looks like you have already done a lot of research.   Perhaps you are just wanting descendants to contact you?

Hi Ros,

Thanks so much for all the references you sent, I had some of the stuff but there were some interesting snippets I didn't know. I could place nearly all of the names in the obituaries, I have just discovered that the wife of Pater Luke, Edna May Harrison died in February this year so I presume there must be some close relatives of her in the Brisbane area.

Going through the file of John Hoggan Campbell is very sad but interesting to see the hand written notes about his illegitimacy and the sorrow in the tone of the Mother's letters. Imagine having to write to the authorities asking for more info on your MIA son and not finding out for months that he was dead.

It would be great to find some descendants but not holding out much hope.

Many thanks again,

Gary

As this forum is about finding Ancestors rather than living living decendants why not place an Advertisement in one of the papers in Brisbane. Or use the White pages?

Hi Gary,
Yes these digitised war service records, especially for those who died, are so moving and the army sounds so unsympathetic [understatement].

I've made some great contacts via this forum - 2 new cousins (one not at all interested in family history) and reconnected with 2 other cousins from childhood.  So there's definitely hope.

regards,
   Ros
(adding : got up early to watch Scotland v Australia match - should have stayed in bed  :(  )

I think you have to put yourself in the shoes of the person who wrote up these records. If they were sympathetic to those relatives, what a minefield that could open up. How would they view their JOB....what memories would they carry throughout their lives. Distance in mind and in words staves off the hardness of the facts.

Isn't there a paper in Brisbane that has a special reconnect section in it? I seem to recall that in other posts. Courier Mail perhaps? Trying to find Campbell relatives, thats a bit tricky!

At least Breciano got one in ;D

The Courier Mail has a Tributes site
http://tributes.couriermail.com.au/obituaries/couriermail-au/
where can search for death notices in all Brisbane newspapers for past week, six months, year. etc.   But it is misbehaving for me ... :(

I can't see a contacting family section  ...

regards,
   Ros

Yes Neil - an incredibly sad time with so many deaths.  It's impossible to imagine how they coped with so much tragedy.

Hi Gary,

There are lots of submitted trees on Ancestry for these families in Queensland.  One can be contacted through Mundia which is free - you just have to register.

http://www.mundia.com/gb/  (search for first name: HOGGAN  surname: CAMPBELL)

Hi Debra,
Thanks for that reference, I have found lots of info on Mundia. I have made contact with a few descendants, they are full of interesting stuff including photos.
I've tried ancestry before on a trial period but haven't come across this site. I've uploaded my tree for anyone interested.

Many thanks again,

Gary
ps and to Ros, very helpful too, G

Hello Thistle76!

Sorry not to have seen your post about Campbells in Brisbane until now, but I am responding now! I am a great-great-grandson of John Campbell and Elizabeth Hoggan. Are you a relative still in Scotland?

Happy to help out with information.

Peter

Hello Thistle,

Not sure if you're still here on this forum. I've just joined.

I am the granddaughter of Flora Kelly Campbell and Alexander William Adrian Foreman.

We could possibly exchange information?

Kind regards
Robyn

Hi Robyn, I think I have tried to make contact with you before and can’t seem to remember if we chatted or not. Happy to exchange stories and pictures. I think Kris Haynes has posted a few and I’ve taken quite a few of mine from her. Not sure I am her favourite person after I questioned one of her captions and she wasn’t very happy with that. But hey ho!
I’m descended from Lizzie Ferguson, younger sister of John Campbell who emigrated to Queensland in 1911 I think. She died in aberfoyle and I have very vague memories of her. I live in Glasgow which is only 30 mins away from Drumlean.
