I have access to Ault Hucknall records 1662 - 1910 including Monumential Inscriptions if anyone wants a look up
Carol

I have a marriage record of a John Saunders and Rebecca Brocksopp on 29 December 1817 in Ault Hucknall. However, I have no information of the names of the fathers' names or their occupations. In other words no information except the marriage record. If you could add something I would be most grateful.
Thank you,
marp

Hi Marp
The marriage entry states they were bac & spin of that parish and the witnesses were Elizabeth Jepson & Edward Taylor.
There is a John Saunders bapt 17 Dec 1792 to Richd & Ann abode Hodmoors.
I can only see 2 baptisms to John & Rebecca at AH and his occupation is given as Miller.
I can't see a baptism for Rebecca but there is an MI
Rebecca Saunders who died Jan 6 1837 aged 47 also Barbara Saunders who died ?? aged 5
There is different information in the burials for these two.
Barbara buried 16 Jan 1837 aged 16 abode Stainsby
Rebecca buried 8 Jan 1837 aged 17 abode stainsby

Many thanks for your efforts Carol. The Rebecca who died in 1837 was not the wife of John Saunders as I have her alive and living with John and their children in both the 1841 and 1851 censuses. In fact she died in 1854 E. Retford, Nottinghamshire.
I imagine that as John was a miller they moved around quite a bit.
The Rebecca who died in 1837 was no doubt a relative and I may do a bit of sleuthing to find her.
Thanks again, marp

My 3x Gt Grandmother was bpt. in Ault Hucknall on 22 Jul 1753. She was called Jane Andrew with parents Wm. & Mary Andrew. Did the latter d. & were bu. in Ault Hucknall as they had moved to the area having been m. elsewhere or did they move from the area before their deaths?
Your help in solving this problem would be much appreciated.
Thanks

There is nothing in the Ault Hucknall burials or MI's for a Wm or Mary Andrews. Their abode on the baptisms entry is Bole Barn. Jane seems to be the only one baptised at AH
Sorry

Thanks for the look-up even though it didn't add any further information. I will just have to keep looking although I now know where they weren't bu.

Hiya bionic, Jane 'jenny' burton born 1753 was my 6x great grandmother. Which of her children are you descended from? I have some info if you want to swap stories
-
Hi Stainforth - Jenny Burton was my 3x Gt. Grandmother who lived most of her life in Hucknall Torkard. She m. Joseph Burton & they had at least 8 children inc. my 2x Gt Grandfather Joseph Burton. Incidentally in case you are not aware this was their second child bpt. Joseph the 1st having d. the year prior to the 2nd Joseph being b.
So far I have not found anyone following this line further forward- do you? or are your ancestors down a different line?.
Are you aware there is a quarterly newsletter called "Hucknall Times" which I find quite interesting?
I wrote an article about Jenny which was published in this newsletter which if you interested I could send you

I'm not sure I'm inserting this email correctly but here goes!
My 4x grandmother was Jenny Andrews Burton.
She is my pipe smoking ancestor.
It is amazing that here I find myself on Roots Chat almost one year after your post.
I descend from Joseph Burton and Ann (Smith)
My info includes some newspaper articles that you may have but I'm willing to share if you do not.
I have not been able to discover anything on Jenny's parents other than what is recorded on Family Search.
I do hope you receive this.

I am now tracing the Pemberton family in Ault Hucknall. In particular the parents and grandparents of Ann Pemberton. I believe she may have been born around 1761. She married Richard Saunders in Ault Hucknall on 3 December 1782. I would be most grateful if you have access to parish records to see baptismal dates for Ann and any details of her parents or grandparents that are available.
Thanks!
marp

There are two baptised around that time at AH
Anne Pemberton to Thomas & Mary 22 Feb 1757 abode Hardstoft
Ann Pemberton to Robt & Ann 23 Jun 1766 abode Hardstoft
Carol

Many thanks Carol for sending the information. I will try and check out which Ann(e) Pemberton married Richard Saunders in 1782.
Thanks again for all your help.
marp
-
Hi Marp
Do you have details from the marriage entry?
Richard Saunders, widower, otp & Ann Pemberton, spin otp by licence
witnessed by John Limb & George Ball
Carol
-
Thanks for the further information, I had no details of the marriage entry of Richard Saunders and Ann Pemberton.
Do you think the Ann Pemberton was the daughter of Robert and Ann or Thomas and Mary?
I realise spelling was more than a bit erratic in those days but I am looking at Ann without the 'e'.
On another matter the Pemberton family seem to figure in quite a few settlement examinations in Ault Hucknall as I think the family originated in Coleorton, Leicestershire.
Thanks again, marp
-
Hi Marp
Have you found Ann's death / burial? If an age is given you can work back.
When and where is the last sighting of her?
Carol
-
Hi, I am still searching for further details of Ann Pemberton, wife of Richard Saunders. You are quite correct I need some other landmarks in her life and work backwards to find out her parentage. Thanks again for all your help.

Coming late on this..and not knowing any dates from the current intercourse...I offer the following from the Ault Hucknall Parish Records:-
Ann Pemberton daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth baptised 30.07.1790
Ann Pemberton daughter of Robert and Anne baptised 23.06.1766
Anne Pemberton daughter of Thomas and Mary baptised 22.02.1757
Ann Pemberton spinster off this Parish..married Richard Saunders by Licence..03.12.1782
Anne Pemberton married Thomas Hopkinson 30.08.1825...........

I am not much further along with the Ann(e) Pemberton who married Richard Saunders on 3 December 1782 in Ault Hucknall, Derbyshire. I am a descendent of this couple!
I believe that Ann died in Killamarsh, Derbyshire in 1795. I am no closer in knowing her birthdate (and therefore which Ann Pemberton) as I do not know how old she was when she died.
I note that in Ancestry that she was buried in Ault Hucknall on 12 May 1795. Is this likely to be correct?
Any information would be appreciated!
Thanks, marp
-
Hi Marp
There are these burials at AH
12 May 1795 Ann Saunders abode Hodmoor, wife of Richard (no age given)
This could be Richards first wife
15 May 1782 Betty Saunders, abode Hodmoors, wife of Richard.
22 July 1825, Richard Saunders aged 82 abode Hodmire
Carol
-
Thanks for this. I had a look at Philimore's marriage registry for Hault Hucknall and noted the following:
Richard Saunders married Mary Coope by license 25 June 1772
Richard Saunders married Betty Elliott on 5 April 1782
Richard Saunders married Ann Pemberton 3 December 1782
Now here is a puzzle. Did Betty marry 'my' Richard and die a month later, and then did Richard (a widower when he married) then marry Ann Pemberton a few months later? All possible but a bit quick! On the other hand perhaps there were two Richard Pembertons.
Thanks for the information, I am now going to try to look further.
marp
-
It looks like there were two Richard's around at the same time, one living at Hodmoor and the other at Stainsby.
Burials
18 Dec 1821 Richard Saunders aged 82 abode Stainsby
24 Feb 1793 Mary Saunders wife of Richard abode Stainsby
Richard Saunders states he was a bachelor when he married Betty Elliot
There is a child, Ann, baptised to Richard & Betty 29 April 1782 abode Hodmoor
(so only just made it to the church in time!)
Carol
-
Going by his age at burial I think this is your Richard
Baptism
2 Jan 1744 Richard Saunders to Thomas & Rebecca abode Stainsby
The other Richard was baptised
6 June 1740 to Richard & Sarah abode Stainsby

Carol

Of course😝should of figured that out on my own. Last question, please. In your experience, is there a way to determine if the Thomas Tonge who married Mary Wholey has the profession of a smith? An old directory or some other publication I'm not familiar with? Again, thank you so much. Sheila
-
Yes he was a Smith
There are two baptisms on the AH transcript

Hi, In interested in the Coope/Coup family of Ault Hucknall, particularly Martha Coope who married James Stringfellow in 1735. Is there a possible baptism for Martha in this parish?
Thanks
-
Martha COOP..baptised 26.06.1716 Ault Hucknall..daughter of Johannes and Anna.......she married JACOBUS STRINGFELLOW 25.10.1735..and had two children at AH....Anna baptised 21.06.1736 andf Johannis baptised 24.02.1738.
There is a baptism at Ault Hucknall 27.05.1694 for Johannes son of Johannis..which ,given the run of Johhannes'...could be Martha's grandfather..........
Anything else..just yell
Derek.

Thank you so much, Derek! ;D

Hi,
I have a bit of a mystery with the Brocksopp family of Ault Hucknall. My direct ancestor Rebecca Brocksopp (born around 1799) married John Saunders (bapt 17 Dec 1792 in AH) on 29 December 1817 in Ault Hucknall. I have a fair amount of information on John Saunders but much less on the Brocksopp connection.
I have no baptismal record or birth year for Rebecca and my estimate of her birth is from subsequent census records. Nor am I absolutely sure of her parents.
I believe that her parents were John Brocksopp and Ruby Simpson of Crich. Ruby however, seems to change to Reumah particularly in familysearch records and I presume this is the same person. John and Ruby/Reumah seem to have had the following children.
John (bap 2 Jan 1795 Ault Hucknall - parents John and Ruby)
Hanna (bap 9 July 1796 Ault Hucknall - parents John and Ruby)
Martha 1797 (no baptismal record but evidence from Argentina re age)
Rebecca 1799 (my ancestor's estimated birthdate but no baptismal record)
Henry (bap 3 May 1801 Ault Hucknall - parents John and Reumah)
Robert (bap 2 Jan 1803 Ault Hucknall - parents John and Reumah)
Ralph (bap 20 Jan 1805 Ault Hucknall - parents John and Reumah - died in Buenos Aires)
Grace (bap 24 August 1807 Ault Hucknall - parents John and Reumah)
Patience - (bap 12 October 1809 Ault Hucknall - parents John and Hannah)
Could someone check the above for me please? The names confuse me - John and Ruby, John and Reumah and then a John and Hannah?
Incidentally, for those who might be interested. Ralph, Hannah and Martha Brocksopp emigrated to Argentina and there is some fascinating information on a website on British Emigrants to Argentina and Uruguay in the 19th and 20th Centuries.

Hello again Marp
The first two baptisms, John & Hannah, their abode is given as Crich
The rest of the children their abode just said Hucknall
Patience baptism has parents John & Reumah not Hannah and the date is 12 Feb 1809
Reumah Brocksopp was buried 8 Oct 1817 aged 54 abode Hucknall
Carol
-
Hi Carol, sorry to be difficult. When you say that the two oldest children (john and Hannah) of John Brocksopp and Reumah had an abode in Crich what do you mean? See dates below. Is this from a PR? I am having a bit of an animated discussion with someone who thinks they were baptised in Ault Hucknall.
John Brocksopp baptised 02 January 1795 - 1850
* Hannah “ 09 July 1796 died in Buenos Aires 24 February 1855
* Martha birth 1797 no baptism record in Ault died in Buenos Aires 12 December 1831
REBECCA birth recorded on 1851 census as in Furniss (Furness Vale Derbyshire?) 1799
I am still chasing Rebecca's birth date as she is my direct ancestor. So far no luck whatsoever and I have searched high and low.
Cheers, marp
-
Hi Marp
It means that even though they were baptised at Ault Hucknall they were living at Crich.
I can't find Rebecca either
Carol
-
Very interested to read about the Brocksopp's. This name and also Simpson and Blanksby are in my daughter-in-law's tree. I imagine there is quite a lot of info about these people.
Please have you anything on Marsh and Mary Ann (nee Beighton) Simpson in the Ault Hucknall records?
-
I can't see anything for those names - sorry.
There are a lot of Brocksopps and Blanksby though.
Carol
