Title: Is it me? Genes Reunited new tree design
Post by: Maggie1895 on Thursday 09 August 12 22:12 BST (UK)
Apologies in advance if there is already a thread on this - I did a quick search and couldn't see one.

I've not been on my GR tree for a bit and just saw it - quite ghastly.  Horrid little cartoon male and female heads on every entry, and they seem to be wearing fairly recent hairstyles and T-shirts.   Going back to find that my Victorian and earlier ancestors all have the same cartoon image on their 'boxes' on the tree is actually quite upsetting.   It's just so disrespectful to stick images like that on boxes showing my grandparent's birth in the 1880s.

I know that it's easy to resent and resist all new changes but I don't think this is just me being reactionary, or is it?.

Anybody else with thoughts on the GR tree?

Yes - it's dreadfull!

I also had difficulty in updating my tree. I did not find GR support ...erm.... supportive - so I have cancelled my subscription

Thank you both!   I began to wonder if I was being picky, but I really was upset at the sight of it.

Only problem is that I'm totally non-techy and transferring GedComs etc is a bit of a baffling prospect.  I've now realised, too late, the danger of having all your tree on someone's site so will need to find a good programme to rebuild the tree somewhere where it won't be mucked about with by web designers.

If anyone has any tips or advice, they'll be much appreciated.

I agree with all of you...why fix something that was not broken ::)

GR was my preferred Tree, easy to up-date, very clear to view, plus I could spot any mistake I had made.

I have complained to them about three times, and now they call it improved after listening to our complaints....it is slow and messy.

I am also going to cancel my sub because I actually only stayed a member because I liked their Tree set up so much...time to consider a GedCom.

Amber, ditto!  I always thought their tree was simple to use, easy to navigate and not expensive.
I've just followed their idiot's guide and exported both my husband's and my trees as Gedcoms.   No idea what I can do with them but feel a bit safer having them both as attachments in my email inbox, it's not as if I want to do any more on them in GR whilst they look like that.

The icing on the cake irony is that the e-mails with the Gedcoms attached have come complete with a little teal and purple logo of Victorian silhouettes against the words Genes Reunited - perfectly appropriate and completely unlike the cartoons dumped all over the tree.

Oh well, I've moaned enough for one night - thank you all for making me feel better!

I just wish I didn't have to moan about it, I really did like their Tree...so really I am more upset about how slow,  difficult and messy it is to use now. :-[

I would actually like to be able to purchase the same set of a Tree that GR previously used.

Yes I'm finding the new tree software a pain.I'm in the middle of correspondence now with their "support team".I'm not holding my breath though! My problem is that though the add spouse facility is working the add child one is not.I've tried all the suggestions, adjusting zoom level and compatability but to no avail.

Hi

I too am cheesed off with Genes Reunited and their new tree design.  Why didn't they leave the thing alone as it wasn't broke, so why did they fix it?  You write to them using the feedback button on your tree and nothing happens, the message doesn't get sent and you've lost it (I know I should have copied it!!)  When you do successfully send a message to their supposed "help" desk, their reply bears no resemblance to the questions you've asked.  I would be very grateful if somebody could tell me how I copy my tree to file as I too am cancelling my membership of GR, and try as I may I can't fathom out how to use Gedcom!!!  Any help would be very gratefully received.

Thanks for listening to my moans.

Thanks William, I've exported the Gedcoms for both my husband's and my own trees now, and have them backed up safely.
As to what I do with them and what programme to get hold of to try and land them in, that's another story but at least I have the details.
Franksfan, hope that works for you as well - as to listening to your moans, one good turn etc!    Isn't that how I started?

You could get a free Site at Tribal Pages to show your Tree.

I started with a free tree on Tribal pages, but now pay, I think, £10 a year. It is my safety blanket. Completely private if I want it to be. I can open it to visitors by giving them a password.

I also don't like the new design of GenesReunited .. I have not renewed my membership but mostly because I am really annoyed that I don't get any messages or contact from anyone and then surprise surprise about 2 weeks before the sub is up I suddenly get 3 or 4 queries about people on my tree - this has happened EVERY time and call me cynical but I don't think its coincidence and it makes me feel a bit conned.

I do not use Genes Reunited anymore, my details were used without permission to set up a 'tree' which meant people could find my name and year and place of birth when searching. Also I have seen these details transferred by someone to Wikitree which was then fully Google searchable although I am obviously still living and should be covered by privacy laws. I have had to get everything removed (in the end with Wikitree by threatening legal action) as they did not care before this. I even checked into their 'high recommendation ratings' that they boast of and was not surprised that the high ratings that they received were posted by the owners of the company and their friends ! I am afraid that Genes Reunited and Wikitree are not the most ethical or efficient of companies, and I would never use them.
I would recommend a site such as ancestry where you can set up a free account, and it can be safe and has safeguards for privacy in built.

I would also NEVER recommend anyone to put your tree as public.
There is nothing stopping anyone from accessing your public tree, taking the information that you have and using it as their research, but they may not treat it as ethically and sensitively as you would.
All the information on YOUR tree is still copyright of the original sources, and it is up to you to protect this and also the rights of people on your tree not to have their names and personal details shown to anyone. You have a duty of care to anyone on your tree.

On ancestry you can set your tree as private but index searchable which means YOU have the control over who views your tree or not, and all living people should be set as living, and you should not allow the people viewing your tree to see living people. I have fully private trees on there, which only myself and trusted family members can access upon an invite to the tree from myself via the tree pages.

I had trouble uploading my gedcom recently, but the support team were really helpful and they did it for me in the end.  Not sure what will happen the next time I want to upload, I don't wont to keep asking them to do it for me.  I haven't heard from anyone for ages on that site, so will cancel my sub next time it is due.  I also have a tree on Tribal pages but never hear from anyone on there either.  I think it's all to do with the open trees on other sites.
