I am researching the Barber family originally from Eyke but they moved around during the end of the 19th century. In particular I am looking for the birth of Ernest Edward Barber, who was also was known as Edward Barber whilst in the Suffolk regiment in 1901. I believe he was born in about 1882 but depending on different census he states his birth place as Holbrook or Martlesham. I believe his father is David Barber who was born in Eyke in 1855

I looked at both Holbrook and Martlesham registers but struggled to find a baptism for Ernest.
Some baptisms at Martlesham with David as the father:
Walter 30 Dec 1866 s/o David and Mary Barber (labourer)
Arthur 31 July 1869
Elizabeth Mary 28 May 1871
Eliza Jane 29 July 1873
Emma Louise 7 May 1876
Robert Samuel 1 Feb 1879

Things are not adding up here I'm afraid.
1. There is no Ernest Edward Barber birth registered in Suffolk ca.1882
2. There is no trace either of a David Barber b. ca.1855 Eyke
3. No trace of a marriage between a David Barber and a Maria.
I've found the entry you refer to in 1901 census but no trace of him in 1891.
Why do think his name was Ernest Edward? The only Ernest Barber bc.1882 is an Ernest David Barber born in Martlesham who was the son of a George (bc.1855 Eyke) and Mary Ann - family living in Holbrook in 1891.

George BARBER married March Q 1888 Ipswich 4a/832
On the same page Mary Ann PENNELL
So looks like his father remarried after the death of Maria BARBER - buried 28 Jun 1886 age 29, Holbrook, All Saints.

Think you need to amend your opening post. You state there that his father was named David??
I can't find a marriage between George Barber and Maria - Maria shown 1881 to have been born circa 1857 Harleston, Norfolk.

George BARBER married Dec 1880 Wangford RD 4a/1613
On the same page Maria WILES
That leaves one small problem! On the 1891C there is a son Frederick Barber born c1877 - does this mean George Barber married more than twice??

Thanks for the suggestions.
Yes I can see that I have given the wrong name for the father on my original post; I have the marriage certificate for Ernest which is where I had Ernest Edward as his name. Ernest died at the beginning of the 1st world war his number suggesting he had been in the suffolk regiment and was a reserve. His army records from WW1 only call him Ernest
George Barber did indeed marry again to Mary Ann Pennell and a further time to a Betha Hayward. His mother has to be Maria as he was born sometime after the 1881 census and later census suggest a birth date between 1881 and 1882.
I guess I need to order the certificate for Ernest David ???

Hi, I have this family in my tree!
George BARBER was christened in Eyke on 18 March 1855. He was the son of David BARBER & Harriet LAST.
George BARBER married Maria SHEPPARD March QTR 1884, Samford, vol.4a, p.805.
By this time they had at least five children including Ernest David Barber, born Dec QTR 1881 (Woodbridge vol.4a p.744). 1891 gives place of birth as Martlesham.
Maria was buried in Holbrook on 28 June 1886, aged 29 years
George BARBER then married Mary Ann PENNELL in March Qtr 1888 (Ipswich 4a, p.832).
He married for the third time Dec Qtr 1910 to Bertha S. Hayward (Samford 4a p.2144).
David Barber (father of George) was the brother of my gg grandmother, Lydia Louisa Barber.

Thank you for this information. :)
Not surprised that this has been confusing me; as George and Maria state they are married in the 1881 census! so have been looking for an earlier marrriage.
Still not sure why ernest changed his name to ernest edward on his marriage certificate.
David Barber would be the 4x great grandfather of my husband.
Many Thanks, I have been going round in circles for a long..... time
