Hi, I am new to the family tree stuff and I was after a wee bit of help if possible.
I am looking for my maternal Grandmother. Her name was Irene Margaret Ricard. Not sure of her DOB but my mother was her oldest and she was born in 1938. Irene was married to Stanell William Gale Rees and this was his second marriage. (Any info on that would be nice).
I was also wondering if someone could tell me how to get a copy of Stanells' WW1 service record. He was in the 1st NZEF Rifle Brigade, Number 36931. He died 27/6/1955.
And probably a million other answers as I come up with the questions.
Thanks in advance.

Hi Wendy, and welcome to RootsChat.
Stanel (sic) William Gale REES married Ellen Elizabeth COLVILLE in 1929.
Was Irene born in NZ or in another country? Any idea?

Modified to add: I'll request Stanell's WWI Army personnel file for you. It will appear as a digitized file on the Archives NZ search portal Archway within ten days of the request. I'll do this next week.

It should have taken place between 1937 (the year his first wife died) and 1955 (when Stanel died).
Yes, I can get his probate too. ;)

Thank you all so very much. I am overwhelmed to say the least.
Irene was definately as stated and I know she was dead before my Mum was 20 I am pretty sure. I know she was certainly dead bye the timne I was born in 1961.
I know heaps about Grandad as extensive work has been done on his side of the family, but as he is an Anzac I so very much wanted his service records. They are much harder to get in NZ than here in Australia.
I than you all so much for your welcome and the information so far. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Irene first appears on the Electoral Roll in 1946 ... doesn't help with the marriage year though

I think there must be an overseas connection with her.
-
Hi BGM,
The 1987 death record discovered by Janette provided a date of birth of 14 January 1916, and if this relates to the right person the Irene RICKARD born 1917 may not be her.
And KHP, you said above that "Stanel and Margaret were living in Manawatu-Wanganui according to the Electoral Rolls."
Can you provide a date for this Electoral Roll entry? The Irene May REES who died in 1987 at Dunedin was a widow. She could have moved south after Stanel's death in 1955.
We need to find a record of her birth, and marriage to Stanel.
Spades
-
Hi Spades,
Mum was born in 1934 and Irene would not have moved to Dunedin as she was very obese and wouldn't leave the house. My memory wants me to say that the family never went to the South Island.
Irene and Stanel had 4 children altogether, Joy (deceased), Valerie (deceased) and two living children.
Cheers,
Wendy :)

Haven't got to that point yet lol. Finding getting around the New Zealand Archives a bit difficult. You have to go in person. I live in Australia lol. Trying to find my brothers grave has been hard enough. Will have to get someone to go there I guess. Is this correct. And as my brother hasn't been dead for 50 years yet will this make it more difficult to find his grave.
Cheers,
Wendy :)
-
So Stanel's first wife Ellen died in
1929 1937.
BGM's mum was born in 1938.
Irene died prior to 1955 - what year was their youngest child born? Knowing this will help narrow the search.
Stanel died in 1955 at Palmerston North.

Hi BGM,
I have corrected my reply#29 and now think I have the reason we can't find a marriage...
Stanel's first wife Ellen died in 1929 1937.
BGM's mum was born in 1934.
Spades
p.s. If Christopher MURRELL died as a result of a house fire there would have been an inquest which should be held at the Christchurch office of Archives New Zealand. Christchurch Archives are not operating at full efficiency but someone based there might be able to look for the Coroner's report.

Now theres a thought. God willing NZ will stop her rumbling long enough for them to get some order again.
Thank you again. :)

Yes, I was. That's what Bundygirlsmum needs.
Bundygirlsmum, this means that you can order Irene's marriage certificate which should tell you where and when she was born and the names and occupations of her parents.
You can order it via the NZ BDM website.

Hello Wendy,
As ever, Spades speaks wisely when he says a marriage certificate will help you find out about your grandmother's origin (age, place of birth, parents)
But the 1938 Stanley REES to Irene Margaret RICKARD marriage is classified as a non-historical marriage so won't be available to purchase on the BDM website (unless you have an iGovt ID login which I'm assuming you don't)
If you want to purchase the marriage certificate you'll need the folio number, which I can look-up for you at my local library tomorrow. Then you just phone BDM NZ on +64 (4) 463 9362 and you can order a printout of the marriage register.
A printout sometimes contains additional information not found on a certificate. And it's six dollars cheaper too :-)
The cost of a printout is NZ$20.40 so have a credit card ready.
Will get back to you with the folio number.
And don't feel obliged to make a purchase just because I visited the library. I'm heading that way tomorrow anyway.
Regards

I had a lovely chat with him. The lady in the office showed me where the grave was and there was a flower there already. I asked her if someone had been and she said that when flowers are blown off other graves they place them on the children's ones.
Christopher died on 8 August 1965 so yesterday was his anniversary.
No wonder I found it hard to sleep :'( :'(
I almost had a few tears at the cemetery.

So try this instead (which gives access to Cemetery Search as well).

I have just told my sister about what has transpired and we are off to NZ in late spring to have a little memorial to lay Mum and Dad to rest with their son. He was their Angel (as we all were but even we thought he was an Angel). The fact that yesterday was his Anniversary did not escape my notice. My father committed suicide 10/8/88. August sucks huh!
I will be forever grateful to newbe for her kindness. She knows the circumstances surrounding Christophers death and knows he wasn't abandoned.
