Title: Henry McShane married to Mary Coyle He was a farmer
Post by: marymac72 on Saturday 26 November 11 15:43 GMT (UK)
Trying to get infomation on the farm where my Great Great Great Grandad was a Farmer. He was born in 1820 i believe. I would love to know if this matches anyone elses family tree. I unfortunately have no other info. I'm just concerned that it i'm not sure if it is Ireland or Scotland !!  but really not sure so will post on both boards.

Thank you
M

If you post the same query on more than one board it's best to include a link to the other post to avoid duplication and confusion for those trying to help you. Here's a link to the one on SCOTLAND board-

What's the link from you to Henry McShane? If you don't know anything about him than name of spouse and his possible year of birth then what about his children- where did they live, where were they born, etc.? It's usually best to go back one generation at a time- you may have done so back it's difficult for us to help without all the clues that you've already found  :)

Hi there and thanks for the advice. It's all new to me so i'm not quite getting the hang of it.

This is what i have already ..

Henry McShane and Mary Coyle both born 1820.

They had a son Henry McShane in 1848 (don't know about other children)Died 1917
He and his wife Mary Toner went on to have a son John Harper McShane in 1871 died 1936

John and his wife Janet Nicholson Sanson went on to have a son Gilbert Sanson McShane 1900 died 1967

He and his wife Annie Gemmel Ferguson then went on to have a son Henry McShane who was my father in 1942 died 1999

I have some siblings in notes of the sons, would that help or is what i have provided enough for a search ?

Thank you M

You'll need to trace the family in all possible Scottish records (1911 census might list a more exact place of birth than 'Ireland') to find a location in Ireland (parish if not actual townland, not just a county). Then, you can check to see what resources survive for that area (many church records might not survive and many will probably not be online).

Have a look at Introduction to Irish Records (http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,442233.0.html) and My Ancestor came from Ireland - where do I start? (http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,498742.0.html).

Well there were 1814 McShanes on 1901 census, if you know how old any of them would have been in 1901 you might spot them here...  http://www.rootschat.com/links/0hnf/  (if they were in Ireland in 1901!!)  but allow for inaccuracies with ages!!

As you don't give their religion I've just got them all...

Hi Mary,
Are you sure about your dates, because a Henry McShane and Mary A. Toner had a son James McShane was baptised on 1st October 1844 in the RC Parish of Shankill, Lurgan in Co. Armagh, Ireland and a Jane Heaney is listed as the sole sponsor/godparent?  Could these be your people?

They are listed as living in Lurgan in 1844.  If this is your Henry McShane and Mary Toner, they were probably born in the 1820s, and Henry McShane and Mary Coyle were probably born earlier in the 1800s.
Regards, McShane1
