Has anybody any idea's where I could start my Irish research? I am researching the surnames McLaughlan and Haggerty. Many Thanks :)

all depends on the dates and locations involved.. why not post some of the details you have of your McLaughlan and Haggerty families ?
If the details are after 1864 (or a non-Catholic marriage from 1845) then your search will be with Civil BMD records and possibly the census returns. For earlier events you need to research parish records, in which case you require the denomination of these families and also where in Ireland they lived - ideally the name of the townland or parish.

Thank you for you information. Does anybody have an idea where the surnames McLaughlan or Haggerty originate.

according to McLysaght - Hagerty is a variant of Hegerty or O'Hegerty with origins in two separate groups, one in Ulster the other in Munster.
McLaughlin/McLoughlin primarily west Ulster, but some in Connaught.

I would think that both surnames would occur in the North of Ireland- Ulster-- you could check on here: http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/. GV took place about mid 1800s.
As Shane says- it all depends. Is there any way you can check your family in censuses or church records in later years perhaps?

Many thanks for your advice, both surnames shown up on Scottish Census records as being born in Ireland unfortunately no area.

The names McLaughlin and Haggerty are most likely to be from Donegal, and specifically Inishowen.

I notice in the posts the different spelling of the Surname McLaughlan. I have been tracking my mothers side of the family for several years. Although interchangeable, they are often mis spelled and this leads to confusion and red herring trails for the family units. My Mclaughlans were from the Limavardy area of Ireland. The ancient tribe of McLaughlans were from the north west of Ireland and apparently were at there peak as a "tribe" around the 12th century, whereupon an internal family feud divided the families. Im happy to exchange info and dialogue on this family. Yes, they are hard to trace. :) Richard

Thanking you all for replying. As yet still no luck regarding an area for my McLaughlan and Haggerty I am still searching in Ireland. The christian names of the McLaughlan member is Edward he married a Helen Haggerty in 1851. :)

You should probably be looking for an Ellen Haggerty in Irish records (Helen is the form of the name more commonly used in Scotland).
