Title: Woods Family on Wade Road, Custom House, 1920's - 1940's
Post by: Ithon on Wednesday 01 August 12 13:21 BST (UK)
This might be a long shot?

Does anyone have any memories of the Woods Family that lived at 18 Wade Road, Custom House, West Ham. They lived there from the early 1920's to at least mid-1940's.

They were a large family:-
Adeline Elizabeth (nee Finch) Woods [1893 -1973] married to David Percy Woods [1888-1931]

There were 8 children. The father David Percy worked in the docks. I don't know what the children worked as.

Thanks

Ithon

Have you put something in the local newspaper? It might be a good idea to.

The tree belongs to my Niece by marriage and I am building it for her. Direct line:

F. William Louis C Woods
GF. (Percy) David Woods
GGF. William Woods
etc.,

Are you looking for particular information?

Regards

Sue

I was hoping to find someone who had lived on the street or at least knew the street & the families that had lived there along with the 'Woods' back in the 1930's -40's but no luck so far.

I'm confussed with the names you've supplied -
Do you mean William Lawrence Charles Woods (birth - 25 Aug 1917 - death - 13 Jan 2004) as the father?
and David Percy Woods (26 Jul 1888 - 09 Feb 1931) as the grandfather?
and William Woods (b.1860 - d.27 Oct 1912) as the great grandfather?
If so, I didn't know that Bill had any children!

William Louis C Woods born 12 Sep 1917 died 30 Oct 1975
married Margaret J Pocock

Definitely not a 2004 death because I have his probate.

Edit: Boy am I pleased I picked up your message. You put doubt in my mind, I only started this tree 4 days ago and haven't, as yet, ordered certificates.

I have been in touch with Niece and she seems to think that there is a mystery relating to his birth. The dates I have given for William b.1917 and death 1975 are correct. However there is a mystery relating to his Father.

I have this afternoon ordered a couple of certs to move forward.

Again, thank you for making me review this earlier than I would have.

Yes, my next question is are you sure William's father is correct and/or, was your William born out of wedlock?
It's interesting how similar the names of the 2 Williams are.
I'm very sure that the David Percy I have only had 9 children & the William I have was never married & was in fact engaged for about 50yrs! & no known children.
So I was beginning to wonder whether your neice was born out of wedlock.
You should get some clarification when you get the certificates.

Indeed things are very murky.

Family verbal history (which I have just heard) says that William Louis was an orphan. Hmmmm I rather think that the illegitimate 1917 in Marylebone birth may be his! Copy cert will hopefully confirm that. That reason may well explain the orphan explanation. His marriage cert may give some more info too.

Thanks again for setting me straight  ;D
