My grandfather, Thomas Hughes, married Mary Anne Archbold in 1905 in Rathmines, Dublin.
Mary's father was Thomas Archbold and her mother's maiden name was Anne Smyth. Mary also had a sister called Ellen Archbold. The family lived in Leinster Street, Athy. The time period we are talking about here is late 1800's and early 1900's.
I know that Anne Smyth died in 1887 and is buried in Kilberry Cemetery but I haven't been able to trace whatever happened to Thomas Archbold. If anyone can be of any help I would really appreciate it.

You may have this
Marriage references for Thomas ARCHBOLD and Anne SMYTH (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FYSW-PZQ)
Births of Anne and Ellen (https://www.familysearch.org/search/records/index#count=20&query=%2Bsurname%3Aarchbold~%20%2Bbirth_place%3Aathy~%20%2Bbirth_year%3A1870-1880~%20%2Bfather_givenname%3Athomas~%20%2Bmother_givenname%3Aanne~%20%2Bmother_surname%3Asmith~)
Death reference for Anne ARCHBOLD (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FTWR-YMN)
Anne's death cert should state if she was a widow or not and this could place Thomas
There is are 16 death for a Thomas ARCHBOLD between 1877 and 1901 (census date where I cannot see him) DETAILS (https://www.familysearch.org/search/records/index#count=20&query=%2Bgivenname%3Athomas%7E%20%2Bsurname%3Aarchbold%7E%20%2Bdeath_year%3A1877-1901%7E&death_place1=8%2CIreland)
You can rule out those that are children and a few more and maybe if not already done so, invest in the others to locate Thomas
Also remember that the name may be incorrectly registered (e.g. Archibold, Archibald, etc.)
This looks like Mary on the 1901 census (http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Dublin/Rathmines___Rathgar_East/Richmond_Avenue/1294090/)located close to where she married and lived in 1911
This could be Ellen in 1901 in Dublin on the census as Nellie (http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Dublin/Fitzwilliam/Camden_Street_Lower/1305668/)
Possibly marriage (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FYX2-NMW) match is Michael Stapleton ruling this out based on this death reference in 1929 (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FTJ1-RZR)
This is most likely Thomas on 1901 Census (http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Dublin/Rathmines/Coulston_Avenue/1294930/)even though shown as born in Co. Kilkenny rather than Co. Carlow on 1911; could be based on who completed the census or being born near the borders of the counties.
This is the Hughes family on the 1911 Census at #1 Tramway Cottages (http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Dublin/Rathmines___Rathgar_West/Tramway_Cottages/61814/)
Tramway Cottages is now known as Coulson Avenue Highfield Grove (see further comments) and the JOHNS at #6 were our relatives!!
Thomas most likely worked along side William!!

Myluck!, many thanks for the details you posted.
I'll investigate the details you gave me but I had some of these already.
Coulson Avenue still exists and it is just off Rathgar Avenue. Tramway Cottages is now called Highfield Grove.
Due to a Smyth connection I have in Athy I got great information on the Smyth family but I'm up against a brick wall tracing the Archbold connection. I'll use the details you posted about Thomas Archbold to see if I can come up with something.

Do you have Thomas and Anne's marriage certificate?
This would have Thomas' father's name and the church record, if you are lucky, could have both parent's names
Thanks for the information on Coulson Avenue
I had been told it was Tramway renamed
Members of the Johns family lived on Coulson up to ten or so years ago

I have marriage details from the rootsireland website.
On 7 Nov 1872 Thomas Archbold, Athy, Roman Catholic, married Anne Smyth, Athy, Roman Catholic, In the parish of Athy.
Thomas' father was also Thomas Archbold and Anne's father was Patrick Smyth. There are no mother's details.
The witnesses were Daniel Smyth and Mary Carroll. I know that Daniel is a brother of Anne's so it looks like Thomas chose his future brother in law as his best man.
I suppose it's possible that either Thomas did not come from the Athy area or he did not have a brother.

I've had a quick look at the records for ARCHBOLDs in Kildare at that time
There are at least 15 couples with the groom's name ARCHBOLD who married and had children between 1870 and 1890; this implies a settled family especially based on the spelling
Two name their father as THOMAS
Marriage of Christopher ARCHIBALD 1867 (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FG88-N86) to Julia DUNNE
Their listed children in Kildare and north Wicklow (https://familysearch.org/search/records/index#count=20&query=%2Bsurname%3Aarchbold~%20%2Bbirth_year%3A1867-1885~%20%2Bfather_givenname%3Achristopher~%20%2Bmother_givenname%3Ajulia~&collection_id=1584963)
Marriage of Mary ARCHBOLD 1868 (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FGZ5-9D1) to James CONLON
Their listed children in Kildare (https://familysearch.org/search/records/index#count=20&query=%2Bsurname%3Aconlon~%20%2Bbirth_year%3A1867-1885~%20%2Bfather_givenname%3Ajames~%20%2Bmother_givenname%3Amary~%20%2Bmother_surname%3Aarchbold~&collection_id=1584963)
Checking the records of their marriage may give a mother's name, it may also confirm the same parish or further details from witnesses/sponsors.
If you do not have an original certificate or have not seen the original church record for Thomas and Anne SMYTH I suggest that this is something you also consider. Although rootsireland has a significant database of information it is transcribed where errors and omissions can occur.
