Mozilla firefox said that it needed to update itself this afternoon, it had been taken over by search conduit but I managed to get rid of that.
Now I have lost the forward one page, back one page function. The little icons are there but when I click them nothing happens. I am not very computer literate, can anybody HELP please,

I don't use Firefox, but this may help:

Try http://support.mozilla.org/en-US/search?e=es&q_tags=desktop&product=desktop&q=search+conduit or https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/fix-problems-your-home-page-or-search

Could I uninstall and then install Firefox, or is that too risky?
-
Try this:
View > Toolbars > Customise. Now drag each forward and back button to this area and click done. When you have done this do the same and put them back. If that doesn't work have a look in the large box again as there might be another forward and back button that you can use instead.

Normally I'd go for clearing the browser cache, but as it's a recent update that might not achieve anything. Following that I'd go for a clean install - I don't think there's any risk, but that's just my opinion.

Problem solved, don't ask me how.
Somehow had a troubleshoot page, answered a few questions and up came that firefox 14 something was incompatible and that the problem was fixed.
Closed firefox and restarted computer, went again to firefox and I could go forward and back one (or more) pages.
The gremlin must have taken pity on me and undone its work.
Thank you all for your suggestions
Special thanks to Alanb, I now have a bookmark button where it is most easy for me to click on

I see you have just posted your reply:
If you are using version 13 or the new 14 try:
>>Help>>Troubleshooting Information and click on the button at the top right hand side
Reset Firefox to it's default.
This is a new feature built in to version 13/14 only, previous versions need a uninstall/re-install
Good luck

Confusion Have now bookmarked this page, how to reset to default is always good to know.
Also had a little giggle at your choice of username, there has been a lot of it about here
