Title: Marconi information
Post by: veekay on Monday 23 July 12 14:08 BST (UK)
I wonder if anyone out there could point me in the right direction.  I am trying to discover a little about the Marconi company and why a wireless operator would leave London twice to go to Canada/USA.

Veekay - welcome to RootsChat.

The company was involved in early transatlantic communications - that may have some relevance.

There's a book that might help "A History of the Marconi Company 1874 -1965" by W J Baker - it was published in 1998, but a library may have it.

The Marconi Archives are at the Bodleian Library, Oxford. There's a detailed list at:
http://www.bodley.ox.ac.uk/dept/scwmss/wmss/online/modern/marconi/marconi.html
which looks as though there's a large volume & plenty of business papers, so a visit could be worthwhile.

In addition to the information given above, Marconi, along with GS Kemp and P Paget, went to Signal Hill, St John's Nova Scotia in 1901 to receive a signal sent from Poldhu in Cornwall.  This signal was disputed and so Kemp and Paget returned a year later to repeat the experiment.

The connection with Galway is that earlier in 1901 a station was set up in Clifden to receive a relayed message from Poldhu via Co. Wexford.

As George Stephen Kemp is my Gt Gt Uncle, I have been interested in the development of radio communication from a very early age, and know from family history research that tracking him across the world is difficult, he never stopped anywhere very long!

This is an old topic (2012) and the original poster hasn't been online since Jan.2013 but the subject of Marconi employees has come up a few times before-
