I have a photo of my Grandfather John Hurdley in uniform. His hat says HMS Curlew and I think it would have been taken between 1910 and 1920 but I'm having difficulty finding out anything about him. I know he married my Nan Victoria May Buck in 1919 in Southampton but have nothing else to go on. any help or advise on where to start appreciated

Here is the marriage registraton details. Buying the certificate will give you John Hurdley's father's name.
At first I thought two sisters married two brothers but I now think Victoria M is also registered as May.
From FreeBMD
Marriages Dec 1/4 1919
May Buck married a Hurdley Southampton 2c/96
Victoria M Buck married John Hurdley Southampton 2c/96
Order certificates online from here

In this case I would order using John Hurdley's name only. Check the details on FreeBMD first :)

I don't know if this your man but it may be worth downloading if only for the purpose of elimination.

Great stuff!
If you need to know anymore about HMS CURLEW. Just make another post.

You know more??!!
I could PM you with that record if you are able to help me read it? It mentions The Vivid which I think was a training base/ship It also has a marvelous description of John and 2 moles he has....one on his buttock! :-)

Yes. VIVID was a shore establishment in Plymouth.
Send a PM by all means but If I were you, I would post his Naval records on the general armed forces board. There are several regulars on there who are more knowledgeable than I on Royal Navy matters.
