Title: Cause of death?
Post by: JulesT on Friday 20 July 12 17:26 BST (UK)
Can anyone decipher what is in the cause of death column?  Also the son-in-law's name?

My attempt is:
Acute Enteritis ??
Sudden
as certified by
George ???
MBCM
who examined? the body after death

Son in law's name: M. McF????

Looking at the word Street in the next column I think perhaps it was George Storer.

I think the son in law is M. McFetridge.

I agree with your transcription on the cause of death, and George Storer as Roger suggested.

Thanks.  Amazing what people actually died from in those days!

Not only 'in those days' (whenever they were)

Can be a cause of death today, especially in poorer countries, or in infants.

:-[ I never thought of it like that - that's my problem, sometimes my mouth works before my brain engages.

I think there is a mistake here. George Storer (I would agree with the name) was the medical attendant who certified the death, not the son-in-law whose name appears in the next column as the informant and whose name was asked for. He lived at Tennant Street, Coatbridge (I think I have that right!) - but his name looks like Fetbridge. I really cannot make it out but perhaps someone else can?

Apologies - I did not read the question carefully to see that all the columns were asked for - but the son-in-law's name is still a puzzle.

I think name is M McFETRIDGE

If you put McFETRIDGE into Google (other search engines are available) you will find that it exists as a surname. :)

FETRIDGE also seems to be a name (rarer), but the one we are shown seems to have a Mc in there.

McFetridge could well be right. As the address seems to be quite clear, is there any chance of trying it from the address side - census, town directory or something? If you could find a way of looking at who was living at that address at that time it could confirm the guesses. Just a suggestion.

I think I'll try the 1891 census first - I got sidetracked and haven't done any more searching on this line yet.

Jules

edited to add:  I've checked the 1891 census and I think I have the right people.

Malcolm & Annie McFetridge living in 30 Tennant Street, Coatbridge with their four children.

Did the deceased have a daughter Ann Elizabeth Harrison?

She married a Malcolm McFetridge in 1882, Old Monkland (Middle)

Yes, Ann Elisabeth is the one - as I was editing my post you were posting the info you found!

I'd only checked the 1891 census so thanks to you I have a marriage year - everything fits age wise.
