Rachel she was born c 1800 in Barbados daughter of Isaac( a sugar planter according to her death cert).
In 1817 she married Robert Laurie a lawyer at St . Stephens ,Coleman Street ,London.
On 1841 census she is living in Leith Edinburgh.
They had six children I have a lot of information on the family as this is my OH's direct line.
Rachel was a widow for many years and died on 19 January 1862 in Leith.
I am hoping some one can help me find a bit more info on her ancestors .
Thanks,

Hi ShaunJ,
Thank you very much for this information I am amazed at it all .My main research has mainly
been in Scotland so this is all very new to me.
My mother in law always said some of her ancestors came from the West Indies but we all
just smiled and said really.
I have wondered why they married in London then came to Leith perhaps he was originally from there we shall never know.
I am not at home at the moment but I think that Robert Laurie Young might have been
a grandchild I will look at my info. when I get home.
Many thanks once again .

If you dig around on Google and in Google Books there are several references to the Massiah families of Barbados. There were several Isaacs. Ancestry has many references to Isaac Massiahs as slave owners.
Isaac Hutchinson Massiah "late of Barbadoes" died in West Derby St, Liverpool in 1838 aged 67 (Liverpool Mercury August 24th 1838)

Familysearch.org has lots of Barbados transcriptions these days.
There was a "Rachel de Piza Messiah" baptism in St Michael in 1799 https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XLP9-958 - but according to the transcriptions she had two children baptised on the same day:
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XLG1-T6R
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XLPM-K6T
The Barbados Massiahs appear to be descended from Portuguese Jewish stock so Christian baptisms are unexpected.

Hallo,
I came across this and I am interested to share info . Rachel's father comes up as Witness and Executor to my 5 x G.Grandfather Abraham Lindo. It would seem there are a lot of marriages between the Massiah's and Lindo's so I am interested to tie this up. One thing that I did come across yesterday was a mention of Judith de piza Massiah marrying the young man from Scotland, name escapes me at the moment Robert ??? . I wondered if she was an older sister of Rachel and died before marrying Robert and so Rachel was put next in line to be his wife. Rachel was so young when she married I thought that maybe this could have been possible.
Hope to hear from you
Claire

Hi,
Rachel was the ggg grandmother of my OH. I have very little info. on her before her marriage to Robert Laurie. According to her death cert. she was born c 1800 in Barbados her father Issac .
What has always puzzled me is how she arrived in London married a Scotsman and was in Leith near Edinburgh in 1818 where she gave birth to her first child.
I have not very much info. on Robert no death cert . or wills for either Rachel or him.
I would be very willing to exchange any information if it helps you further your research.
