Help - I've hit a brick wall.
Who were James Monteith (1846 - 1926) and his wife Martha Kane (1853 - 1893) descended from?
James was born in Lislaird, Tyrone. He possibly had a brother Robert and their parents were called Robert and Jane. However, I have nothing definitive so would prefer confirmation if this is correct + any other info available.
Martha (Matty) - I know she married James in 1872 @ Castlederg but don't have confirmation of where she was born / died. Her father was possibly called William (but guessing based on land records).
I believe they were protestants.
All clues gratefully received.

Hi,
I can find a record of the marriage of James Monteith to Martha KEAN in Castlederg Church of Ireland on 11 June 1872. The name Kean may be a mistranscription but it may be worth bearing in mind.
Regards

The marriage certificate for James and Martha should list their fathers' names but since both were born before civil registration of births you'll need to search for other sources such as baptisms (if the church records exist) to possibly discover who their mothers were.

Kingskerswell - yes that is the date I've got for the marriage so looks like different variations of the surname.
Aghadowey - how can I find their baptism records if I don't know where they were baptised?
Are there any particular websites / memberships that you would recommend for irish records prior to 1840?

Not all church records pre-registration survive and of those that do not are all online. It's a matter of searching the local churches once you know the family's religion and where they lived (parish if not actual townland).

That's a real shame. Not living in Ireland will be a major stumbling block.
