Title: 26 Craufurd Rise Maidenhead 1941
Post by: Carrie Ann on Tuesday 17 July 12 12:57 BST (UK)
I have found this address among some old family papers.

Does anyone know if it was a mother and baby home in 1941?

If so where would I be able to search for records and/or information ?

It's not a conventional-looking institution.

Try looking at electoral rolls of the time.
What was the name & nature of informant?

Hi Carrie
I am just starting researching for a friend we think that her sister was living at 26 Crauford Rise Maidenhead, she was adopted at birth  (1944) we are assuming by the Beechings at the above address?
Did you manage to find out anymore about the address was it a mother and baby home?

regards gill

Hi, Carrie Ann,

I noticed your post about 26 Crauford Rise.  I am helping in a search also to find the residents of that address in 1941/1942.  This was also a young single woman who had a son.  We have actually found family members, but we are now all trying to find out what this address was.  Homes for Unwed Mothers seem to still be considered "secret", and it is getting frustrating as this was 75 years ago.  Have you had any luck with this?

I think I am responding to Carrie Ann and several other people who responded to her questions about 26 Craufurd Rise in Maidenhead, England, in 1941.

In 1942/43 this address was listed as a Nursery Home, and it was run by Mrs. Beeching (Matron) for several years before and after these dates.  As a birth certificate from someone whose mother was living here and stated her occupation was a Domestic/Nurse, we have come to feel that this was a Home for Unwed Motherss, and the women took care of their own and others' babies until they were adopted.  We have written to find out more about this Home, but we have not heard yet.  I will post any additional information we find.
