Hello Everyone
Can anyone please give me some ideas on how to organise family photographs? I have the albums and I certainly have the photographs, but I am driving myself crazy as to how to organise them. :-\
I intend to leave the ones I have acquired in the albums they arrived in.
All ideas gratefully received.
A very confused

Thanks Xinia
I'm glad I am not the only one, do you put family groups together, if so how as they sort of drift from one generation to the other.
Maybe chronologically ....that is if you know the date.
I remain very much confused
:'( :'( :(

Yes, I put them into Surname groups, then when the main line marries I seperate her into her married folder. If you can understand me....
So for example I have my nan as a child in the Haywood folder, then when she marries everything after that moved into the Green folder leaving a note to explain that... there must be an easier way.....
;) :D

then when she marries everything after that moved into the Green folder
Why not do copies & put one in each folder ie. nanny Green nee Haywood in the Green folder.

The same applies with acquired albums,do copies.

I am ashamed to say mine are all in a suitcase under the bed. I did make a start on getting them in some sort of order after my husband bought me a really posh album for christmas. I started to get frustrated as who should go where and gave up. I really must make an effort.

I undertook the long task of scanning them all into my computer. It took me ages, but little and often did it.
Then I was able to Photoshop them, and saw some amazing improvements.
They are now stored on the computer and backed up in two places...
The theory was that I could then throw away the originals, and save storage space. Not got around to that, just yet. ::) ;D
But I can organise the pictures any way I please.

My favourite photo album was given to me by an aunt. Lovely black and white photos each one labelled with the date and details. I have scanned them into the computer into one folder. I am so grateful to her for noting all those details. I have kept all the originals as digital copies are unreliable and are subject to becoming corrupted and therefore lost. The originals will be passed on to family.
So my advice is do what she did and label all the photos. Your family will thank you in years to come.

It takes me all my time to give them labels as to who they are. I have to make an effort now and then. Really ought to index them and the same with my certs.

You are all so lucky.
I file my maternal grandparents photo on top of my paternal grandparents wedding photo.
Job done :'( :'( :'(

I have found that one of the best ways to organise photo's is to either scan them yourself (cheaper, but time consuming,) or have them scanned. This way they can be stored on your computer - obviously a separate hard drive would be helpful. As another member suggested, you could also use online storge as an extra backup. As for which order? I tend to keep them in family groups - EG my siblings and I in one folder with our parents. Descendants and predecessors in their own folder.
Hope this helps.

All I can say is that you are all very lucky that you have family photos at all, and that you know who they all are. I have very few family photos. When my Mother passed away two and a half yrs ago I found a large box full of really old photos (in sepia) but these were not labelled at all and so I dont have a clue as to who the people on them were. I have two aunts living who are in their early 80's but they dont have a clue either. Apparently, years ago when my Gt Grandmother died, a lot of photos were found but no-one again no-one knew who the people on them were so they were burnt!! What a waste.

I have photocopied all the old photo's of my ancestors and put them in the relevant ring binders of that family together with the relevant certificates and census information. I have also scanned them and put them all on an external hard drive.
I am now looking for suitable old fashioned albums to put the originals in.
On the back of one of my Mum and Dad's wedding photos is a shopping list Mum wrote out once as she couldn't find a piece of paper!
I'm lucky enough to have photo's of my Grt Granddad, Granddad and Dad all in their Cheshire Yeomanry uniforms, Granddad is on his beautiful horse carring his sword.
I have lots of Dad in Palestine and Syria during WW2 and my Mum's two brothers, so am looking for a suitable album to put them in together with their military records and a history of the Yeomanry who were the last horse soldiers during the war. Thought that would be a nice legacy for my great nephews.
The shoe box full of more modern photo's of the family is another matter. I think they will remain in the shoe box :D

Thanks for that sunflower I'll take a look. I've never been able to find a suitable one in the shops.
My Aunt has the family photo album (from where I acquired all my photocopies) which is gorgeous. It's one of those with beautiful hand painted flowers round each aperture, and has a brass clasp on it. Envy envy!
Kind regards
Su
