Someone I know purchased a number of old post cards from the very early 1900s for her collection. As they have writing on the backs of them, I knew I could possibly trace the family who had written them to each other, so I asked and was allowed to scan them. I thought there may be a descendant who would love to have at least the scans.
I have managed to put together some history of the family, and am posting this thread in the hope that a descendant of the family will come across it and reply.
I have names and addresses from the backs of the postcards, and given names from the greetings written on them. Given names included Elsie, Clara, Lottie, Will, Sid, Frank, Nellie, Bill, John, & Dorie.
Places mentioned are Nantawarra, Whitwarda/Witwarta, Beaufort via Port Wakefield, & Purnong/Pernong Landing.

Joshua Spurling travelled to South Australia on the Shackamaxon with his parents William and Lucy Spurling, and younger brothers William, Samuel and James. Luckily they all survived the voyage, as the Shackamaxon, which left Liverpool on 4 October 1852 with 696 migrants for Port Adelaide, lost 65 people, mostly children through scarlet fever.
In 1841 William was an agricultural labourer in Banham, Norfolk. Wife Lucy and children Mary Ann, Anna, Robert and 9 month old Joshua are with them.
By 1851 William, Lucy, Joshua, William and Samuel and 3 year old John Spurling are paupers in the Guiltcross Union Workhouse. 13 year old Robert is with his 19 year old sister Mary Ann and her 11 month old son Jacob in Banham. Robert is working as an Ag. Lab. At some stage it appears he migrated to South Australia as well.
Deaths of William and Lucy….
William SPURLING aged 96 of Beaufort died on 12th July 1895 at Beaufort.
Ref = Gil 228/58
Lucy SPURLING aged 88 and married of Golden Grove died on 24th September 1888 at Golden Grove.
Ref = Hig 173/415
Relative is listed as Robert SPURLING and given as husband, but I think this is Lucy and William’s son Robert. I haven't as yet found his arrival in South Australia.
So if anyone finds this thread, and is interested in the scans of the post cards, please reply. I’d be happy to let you have them. One appears to have been written by William Alfred Spurling, son of William and Charlotte Dohse. He died in WW1.

Hi Dee
This is our family.... I have the whole family tree and knew a few of these people - all gone now. Don't know how the postcards were sold off. Many thanks for your interest in chasing this up. Love to hear from you because some in the family would really treasure them.

Hi Max.
Glad you came across the thread, and welcome to RootsChat!
As I said, I don't have the actual post cards, as I wasn't the purchaser, but I would certainly love to let you have a copy of the scans I made. However, each scan is over 1mb and there are about 50 scans, so emailing them could be quite a task.
There are two possibilities.....I could reduce the size of each image and then email them to you in groups......or I would be prepared to burn them to a disk and send them to you by snail mail. Just let me know which you'd prefer, but don't put your personal information re email address of home address on this thread, as it is not permitted. You'll need to send me that information in a Personal Message.
Let me know on this thread if you have any problems with the personal message system, and I'll reply as soon as I'm able. At present I have limited internet access so it could take a little time.
Dee.....who's very happy to hear from you. :)

Hi Dee
Many thanks for your quick response. Only problem is I don't yet know how to access the personal message system. I will try and work that out. Still learning (big time!).

Max,
At the top of this page you should see a My Messages tab and as I've sent you a message it probably has a number in brackets by it. All you have to do is click on the My Messages.
To send a message to someone you can always just click on the little Personal message Icon under their username on the left hand side of a message they have posted on a thread. If they are online, this icon will be green. If they're off line it will be greyish white, but you can still click on it to send a message.
Hope this helps.
Dee :)
