Title: Bethnal Green burial 1950/Snelling
Post by: joancrellen on Friday 13 July 12 23:09 BST (UK)
There is a death record for a Mary Snelling as follows:-  1950 (4) Bethnal Green  5c  189  [aged 87]

Electoral roll records show a Mary Snelling living at 16, Ramsey Street, Bethnal Green from around 1918 to 1951. There aren't any other Snellings with her.  Allowing for the fact that the 1951 roll info. would be collected in 1950, and as she seems to have disappeared after that date, I am assuming that the above death record could be hers.

Would that mean that she might possibly be buried at St. Matthew's Church?  If so, would any of you good people out there be able to access the burial record in order to obtain more info. to verify, or otherwise, that this is the Mary I have searched for for so long?  The age is, at the moment, the only detail which fits my Mary.

I know I could send for the death certificate but Mary has proved so elusive that I would like to have more info. before doing so.

Regards,    Joan

According to this

http://www.burial.magic-nation.co.uk/bgbethnalgreen.htm

burials in St. Matthew's were discontinued after 1853.  London churchyards were pretty full by the mid-19th century and people tended to be buried in the huge cemeteries built further out.  I don't know which cemeteries are most used by Bethnal Green, but in 1950 there's also the possibility that Mary was cremated.

Thanks for that info. Jeuel.

I'll hope and pray someone might come across her, or already have her in their research.

Hi

A burial or cremation register would give her date of burial, name and address. Other than the date you would have all the remaining information. If buried and the plot in the cemetery was bought privately, that register would give the date of purchase and by whom and their address and the names and dates of people buried in the plot and at what depth. Many families could afford the funeral and burial but not the cost of purchasing a plot. The closest cemetery would be Tower Hamlets - registers held at the London Metropolitan Archives. Abney Park Cemetery Hackney registers are online. Her name does not appear. Information on those two cemeteries can be found here.

English death certificates give limited information

She doesn't appear to have left a will.

Many thanks Valda.

I'm not surprised she didn't leave a will.  I cannot imagine her having money.  Her husband died in 1896 and she was in and out of the workhouse until 1907, from which date she seems to have disappeared.

I've checked possible marriages but no joy, so am assuming she would die as Mary Snelling.

I just signed for Rootschat today to reply to the post re Mary Snelling. I believe she is my  great Grandmother . My grandmother was Alice Isabella Snelling , born 1896 in BG. She married my grandfather Charles William Miller in 1917 . Her address at the time of marriage was 16 Ramsey Street . I only checked the electoral regs yesterday and found Mary was still at that address until 1950. I imagine it must be the same one- I assumed she died a lot earlier that but i was never sure. If it is the same one , her husband died in 1900 .My father Charles Miller was born at 22 Ramsey Street. Hope this helps
Regards John

Hi there, not sure if this helps, but according to https://www.deceasedonline.com/ there is a Mary Snelling buried on 30  Dec  1950   at Manor Park Cemetery Newham.

You can pay a small fee and look at the burial register or check out who else is in the same grave.
Although somehow I doubt it's family, as there are 5 other people in the same grave.

There's only 1 Mary Snelling in the death index Dec 1/4 1950 so is highly likely to be the same person mentioned in the opening post.

Hi again . I thought it may be Manor Park , as my grandmother Alice Isabella Miller ,who I never knew (nee Snelling and daughter of Mary)
died in 1933 in Bethnal Green and was interrred in Manor Park , but I believe some work was undertaken a few years back and some of the graves may have been disturbed

Hi everyone,

Many thanks to all those who have sent replies, and apologies for not replying to them.  For some reason I did not get the e-mails about them until the one today.

Having read through them all, it would seem the 1950 burial was of Alice's mother.  Unfortunately she is not the Mary I'm searching.

I'll keep searching.    I'll be trying to find a connection between this Snelling family and the one I am researching.

Thanks for the info.  Have taken your advice and adjusted my profile accordingly.

     Ladyhawk

As I posted earlier this Mary is not my Mary.  I have already got the info. you have posted here but, so far, there doesn't seem to be an immediate link with the family I am researching.  Thanks anyway.

I have all the necessary info. on my Mary except her whereabouts after 1907, and her place and year of death.
