Title: baptism records
Post by: Kathymax on Thursday 12 July 12 09:01 BST (UK)
I am hunting for the parentage of Alexander Maxwell, b. approx 1824 (according to 1901 census) but not sure where, married Eliza Waide (nee White) 24th January 1878 in the Portglenone first Presbyterian Church, moved into Eliza's home at Drumrankin and had 5 children to Eliza. He emigrated to NZ and died in 1919.  Trying to track his family. His death cert named parents as John Maxwell & Jane Ewert (not sure of spelling). Photo attached is of Alexander and his sons & daughter in NZ.

Hi,
The father of Alexander Maxwell who married Eliza Waide in Portglenone in 1878 was called Alexander.

Link to Alexander Maxwell in 1901 census-
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Antrim/Ballyconnelly/Drumrantin/924610/

PRONI (www.proni.gov.uk) has the following-
"Letters of Administration (with the Will annexed) of the personal estate of Eliza Maxwell late of Drumrankin County Antrim who died 23 November 1893 at same place were granted at Belfast to Alexander Maxwell of Drumrankin Farmer the Husband."
The Will is quite detailed and mentions "formerly Mrs Daniel Wade", "the farm which I now hold in Trust for the family of my first husband and whose it was", eldest son Benjamin Wade, daughter Annie Campbell alias Wade, daughter Rebecca Abernethy alias Wade, daughter Eliza Jane Maxwell, son Thomas Maxwell, son John Maxwell, daughter Mary D. Maxwell, "present Husband Alexander Maxwell"...
Although it doesn't help find the origins of Alexander Maxwell it does list her children and wonder if other branches of the family might know something about Alexander Maxwell.

thanks so much for that information. It cracked another mystery in that I found the dod for Daniel Waide as 1884, so I can now change it correct date to 1874.  I had the other information about the children who all came to NZ.  Will still keep searching as to his birth parents as trying to track family back to Scottish roots  :D

Just read the top message - that Alexander's father was "Alexander"!!!! On his Death Cert, his father's name was shown as John Maxwell married to jane Ewert.  I wonder if his name was Alexander John?? I have a picture of a gravestone in 1st Ahoghill Presbyterian church, Joseph & Mary Maxwell, lying with their parents Alexander & Jane, and children, Elizabeth & Alexander. I thought it was our lot (I have letters here from Alexander and Betty, written to my grandfather & his brothers) but because of the name on the death cert I was unsure.  Now it seems that there is the connection and Joseph Maxwell must be my g.grandfather's brother. Thanks so much for that information.  I can now go on down that track!!  :)

Information on death certificate is only as good as the informant's knowledge and a marriage certificate is much more likely to be accurate since the person was providing the name of their own father. In this case it's unlikely that the father was 'Alexander John'.

do you know where I would go next to track the Maxwell family back further - I now know that Alexander Maxwell & Jane Ewert were married and had 3 children that I know of, Alexander (my g.grandfather), Joseph who married Mary Andrews, and Mary Jane who married Daniel Gregg.

What is the best option for me now to find details on the following - Alexander Maxwell dob (approx) 1783, dod April 10th 1881; Jane Ewert dob (approx) 1798, dod 1878.  Would there be marriage cert to be found? and if so, how would I go about it?

Thanks so much for the vital information you have already given me.

Hi,
Civil registration of marriages started in 1845 for Protestants and 1864 for Catholics. All birth and death registration started in 1864. There will be no certificates before these dates. To find any more you will have to depend on those church records where they exist. These are few and far between before 1840.

Hey folks… in an idle moment I decided to look for the birth/place of Benjamin White WAIDE, which then led me to wonder more about his family and so on… and here you all are providing information for another New Zealander.

Daniel & Elizabeth's eldest grandson, born here in NZ, was my dearly beloved gt. uncle by marriage. I also called his siblings the courtesy title of Aunt Lizzie and Uncle Dan, so the names lived on, although only Lizzie had children, all daughters, so that branch of the WAIDE name has died out.

Anyway, this is just a general thank you for the records I'll use, and I'd like to hear directly from Kathy, so get in touch with me please.

Along with a small fortune from my gt. Uncle I also inherited a beautiful oil on wood painting, of a youngish woman that no~one in my family ever recalls seeing before it was found, wrapped in brown paper and string, on a wardrobe shelf.  I've had it dated to mid~18th century, and I wonder if you might recognise it, if you have other family memorabilia.

ah no, Daniel's father Daniel died on 5 October 1884, and it's his Will that's online.  Daniel jnr died intestate, and letters of administration were granted to Elizabeth (as per her Will).

There is a Memorial Inscription (online) detailing the two Daniels and other family members, with jnr's death at age 34 on 23 Jul 1876, two years before Elizabeth remarried.

Hi Jools,

Welcome to RootsChat :) I am very sorry but the original poster Kathy email address is no longer working  :'(

It is really good to find out that the research already done by everyone will be useful to your research into your Waide family :)

Regards

Sarah :)

Thanks Sarah…
~ I noticed the comment about her email address, but thought she might come back in here one day, and find me!  I could probably chase her down if I felt so inclined, but I've put the WAIDES to bed for now, and gone back to some of my more important brick walls!

LOL

Hi Jools
I was reading what you had to say about Benjamin White Waide/Wade. You are quite correct in the details you have found out but I see you have lost touch with the person you were connected to about this.
I am the mother of 3 Maxwell Boys who are direct descendants of this Maxwell Family and have been researching this Benjamin whose mother Eliza Jane married Alexander Maxwell, in turn Eliza Jane Died not very old only 7 days after her youngest child Samuel White Maxwell was born. This Samuel is my husbands Great Grandfather. Recently on Ancestry.com. I along with a Maxwell cousin have been uploading photos and names of this family to the tree. I would be very interested to hear from anyone who knows can help or is related to either the Maxwell or White sides and the family who emigrated from Ireland to N.Z after Daniels mother Eliza Jane Died.
