Title: Marriage of Malachy HEALY and Sabina DUDICAN
Post by: stethomson on Thursday 12 July 12 01:26 BST (UK)
Hi, does anyone have any info on the church marriage please of:

Malachy HEALY and Sabina DUDICAN, in 1849 in Co. Sligo?

I've only just started to look into the Irish branches of my family having focused on the Scottish parts till now (I'm based in Scotland so resources easier).  Are these names common, or not?  Any info gratefully received, thanks!

Hello and welcome to Rootschat.

There are some references here to begin your search:

http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/

has only a couple of entries for the name Malachy Healy but only one in Sligo. The townland is Creevykeel, in the civil parish of Ahamlish.

Family Search has these baptisms and births -Healy (https://familysearch.org/search/records/index#count=20&query=%2Bsurname%3Ahealy~%20%2Bfather_givenname%3Amalachy~&collection_id=1584963) some of which are your family but Sabina's name is mispelt.

These will hopefully give you a starting point.

regards
heywood

http://sligo.rootsireland.ie/ shows a possible marriage by using the free search.
I looked at marriages with those spouses for 1850 +/- 5 yrs and it shows 1 possible match.
You need to be a member (free) but then have credits to download the information.

Hi heywood,

Thanks for your help.  Will my search have to be this speculative without paying as much to view the originals on rootsireland?  It's quite expensive.  Thanks.

The records on RootsIreland are transcripts - they dont have images.

after a bit of trial & error with the free index, I believe that the marriage that heywood mentioned took place in Ahamlish RC parish in 1849. This parish is located in the north of Co. Sligo and borders Co. Donegal.

Note that RC marriages from this time dont give much detail, so the record may only show date of marriage, names of the bride and groom plus the names of two witnesses. A place of residence may be included for the groom and/or bride.

Even more reason for me not to use rootsireland then! :-)  Thanks for this, will see what I can do with this info.

Hi again,

I've found another piece of evidence which points to the 1849 marriage between Malachy Healy and Sabina Dudican in the Ahamlish R.C. Parish.

So far as I can tell the R.C. Parish Church for Ahamlish is in Grange, Co. Sligo, just a few miles down the road from Cliffony, Co. Sligo, where their son, Martin Healy (Halley) was born c.1857 (I got this information about Cliffony from Martin's wife's Poor Law application made in 1908 in Glasgow).  So the dates and places seem right.

This also seems to tie in with Heywood's finding of Malachy Healy in 1858 Griffiths Valuation, for Creevykeel in Ahamlish Parish.  Creevykeel is less than 1 mile from Cliffony on the map.  Sounds good?

Can anyone tell me please where the actual marriage register for R.C. Ahamlish 1849?  There seems to be conflicting information at http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/IRL-SLIGO/2004-02/1077131249 and if the information is available in Dublin to simply walk in and look for free, I have a friend living there who I could ask to do that for me.

Thanks,

Stephen

Hi again,
According to this thread http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=390240.0, they are in the National Library. Shane mentions baptisms - not sure about marriages.

Films of most historic records for RC parishes are available in the National Library in Dublin. The records for the parish of Ahamlish, Co. Sligo are on film reference Pos. 4602. Baptisms, marriages & death/burials are included back to about 1796. The parish is sometimes listed as Ahamlish (Cliffoney)

In the 1830s there were two RC chapels in the parish, the one at Grange and one at Cliffony.

Thanks to you both for your replies.  That's great information.  I will see what I can do with it - presumably once I have the exact date of marriage (rather than just the year) I can place an order for a photocopy of the certificate/entry from GRO?  I've done this previously for a marriage in Belfast in 1872, however I understand that the 1849 marriage might be a single entry on a list of marriages rather than a certificate in its own right - am I still able to obtain a photocopy of this, do you know?

Thanks again,

Stephen

Civil registration of Catholic marriages started in 1864, so no cert will be available - just the parish record.

Details from parish records are often provided as transcripts, as on the RootsIreland website. In some cases images from the registers are also available, as on some parishes on the IrishGenealogy website - this covers Co. Kerry and parts of Dublin, Cork & Carlow

The other way to access the records is to visit the National Library. Some of the film readers in the research room have a scanner and printer attached, where you print selected pages for reference.

....
marriage register for R.C. Ahamlish 1849
....if the information is available in Dublin to simply walk in and look for free, I have a friend living there who I could ask to do that for me.
.....

I dont think the film of the register will show much more than the details I mentioned earlier (reply #5 (http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,606233.msg4557991.html#msg4557991)), but knowing the parish and the year means it should be quite easy to locate on the film.

Ah, I see.  I think there is something reassuring about seeing the original rather than the transcript, it's also a nice addition to the family history files.  That, combined with typical Scots miserliness, has so far prevented me from parting with the 5 Euros for the transcript online - terrible!
