Hiya,
Does anyone have any idea what was written underneath the Streets Coaches sign in the picture included here.
Bit of a tall order but I thought worth a try.
Many thanks.
Lin.

Here is the picture

Hi folks - long time, no see ;D
Hope you're keeping well
Sorry, even with the larger image I can't read anything worthwhile ::)
I can see the word "Betta" I think, but nothing much else. I don't suppose a scan of just that building is possible - with higher res??
Any idea of the date of this pic or if the building is still there today (poss Google street images might help in that case)
Maybe moving this to the Deciphering board might give a few other ideas as well
Good luck
Di

Hi Di,
Thanks for the try, and it is a really tricky one. Ant thinks its something about coal, coke and wood but we thought someone might remember. Good idea on the deciphering board. I think its 1930`s.

PS we are all fine thanks. Hope all is well with you. The weather here is terrible so good job you havnt chosen this summer to visit the old country. :'(

Hi Di
I have put it on the deciphering board * so we will see what happens, I am doing some research into coach operators in Hertford, Ware and the local area so if anybody has any pictures of Streets, Dyes, Cannons or any other local operators I would be pleased to see them or any pictures from Thurgoods the coachbuilders!
Think I have most of the pictures that are generally out there on Flickr or whatever, but hopefully there are some others out there?
Thanks

Hi Anthony :)
Possibly "[something] COKE & WOOD MERCHANT"?
-
John Richard Street was a Coal Merchant, 26 Ware Road, in the 1914 Directory.

Thanks for the wonderful streets pics. My OH is a bus enthusiast and wants to know what the full registration of the bus that's after the charabanc pic. The bus hes interested in has a reg that looks like UP... The photo has the driver standing next to it holding a wash leather/towel or something.
Thanks

Hi there.
I am Michael Street. My Father was John Richard Street who owned "Street,s Coaches. He sold the company in 1970 to "Don,s Coaches" of Bishops Stortford.
I now live in Thailand, if anyone is interested to get in touch with me Please do so.

Hi Ian and Michael
Many thanks for replying, your personal input and photographs are just what I was looking for. If you have any more I (and probably others) would like to see them.
Candleflame
Being in Hertfordshire that coach registration could be UR rather than UP, Hertfordshire being allocated UR, RO and JH, however looking at it again it is probably more likely to be UP or UF?

Hi yes OH was wondering if it was UP which would be a north east reg if they'd bought the coach second hand from someone up where we are.

Welcome to RC. We can only reply here on the threads until you have made 3 posts, then you can use private messaging - bit like internal email. External email addresses aren't made public for obvious reasons. There are many transport enthusiasts out there who would love to see pictures of the old fleets and their history .

Ah yes I have send both Ian and Michael PM's but guess they cant reply until they have posted some more, personally it would be great to see more photos of the vehicles and the depot if they have some?

Thank you for replying. My Father died in 1981. The premisis is now in the hands of "Kwik Fit" tyres.

Ah actually Michael the premises are now in the hands of Hertford Glass, Kwik Fit moved out some time ago and it stood empty for a while with a temporary use as a fireworks shop, I believe there was also a planning application for demolition and replacement with housing but I think that was refused, I do have some pictures of it as Kwik Fit and Hertford Glass.
