Title: Lookup Request: Charles William Langton, Portsea, b. 1868
Post by: snowathlete on Monday 09 July 12 10:36 BST (UK)
Hello,

I wonder if someone might be kind enough to help me?
I am looking for anything on an ancestor of mine, my G G Grandfather's brother.
His name was Charles Langton and he was born in Portsmouth, almost definately Portsea in 1868. This we know from my great aunts notes, but she is no longer with us.
I looked on FreeBMD and there is a Charles William Langton born 1868 in Portsea. So, It looks very likely that this was him. Having said that, it could perhaps be a different Charles from the same family, or from another (we know of at least one other Langton family in the Portsmouth area)

So, it would be good to confirm that this is him. His parents would have been Charles and Amelia, so if a birth certificate could be seen then we could confirm it.

Notes say that he appears in the 1871 census as the lodgers son, his mother being the lodger, her husband at sea, and also appears in the 1881 census. I havent got access to these tho so cant see if their is a middle name or anything like this.

Family lore is that between 81 and 91 he moved to South Africa, and then perhaps Australia/New Zealand.
Lost Contact with family.

Aparently there is a Charles William Langton who served in the forces, with a record in 1897. But i havent seen it.

Thats everything I know. Hope it is enough that someone could help me.

Many thanks
Joel

Thanks Ray. Its nice to have the details to see for myself. Seems that fits with what I was told.

Peter, thanks for the 1871 details on Charles Sr.
Charles Langton Sr was born in 1824/5 and we think in Newbury, because his family had been there since 1679. He left Newbury for Portsmouth to become a marine.
So, the dates seem to match, and him being at sea in 1871. But where is Westbury, Berkshire? Is that Westbury, Wiltshire? That doesnt match quite. Could it be a mistake for Newbury? Or maybe they were away in Westbury for some reason.

These are the notes I have on him:
mentioned in 1851 census as a private.
mentioned in 1861 census as a private R M.
mentioned in 1871 census as a hospital nurse.
mentioned in 1881 census, as a servant.
alive in 1891, mentioned in census. Widow.
doesn't appear in the 1901 census, his son is head of the family by then.

Would be interesting to know more about Charles Sr too, but the reason i am more interested in Charles Jr is because he may, perhaps, have had children and there may be descendants somewhere else in the world that I dont know about that I am related to.

that could well be him. My dad just looked on the net and found this:
http://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/search/results?basicsearch=charles%20langton&frontpage=false&newspapertitle=portsmouth%20evening%20news&page=0

Which says he was 18, which makes him the right age. So, if that is him then he got 6 months hard labour. Wonder what happened next. He doesn't appear to be in the 1891 census, so this 1886 record is the last one we have of him so far.
Thanks for that.

Your right Ray, thats his mother's death isnt it. Handy to know. Before all we knew was that is was before 1891.

Thanks for Trooper C Langton. Difficult to say if thats him or not. My guess is no, but its not really possible to rule him out entirely.

Hi

The National Archives have in their main catalogue a RM service record for Charles Langton, born Newbury, who enlisted in 1843, aged 19, and who left the service in 1865 (ADM 157/452/152). It is possible that he served on HMS Rodney during the Crimean War, because there is a RM private of this name who was present at the seige of Sebastopol and Battle of Balaklava as part of the Royal Marine Naval Brigade; the service record would confirm this.

Also the NA's online catalogue has Charles William Langton's Royal Navy service record, which can be downloaded (£3.50).

Hi Crimea1854,

This is certainly him, because family history is that he was awarded a medal for Sebastopol, and two other battles.

Thanks for pointing out the service record is online. Thats excellent, I will get it!

Best

Joel

The RM record can be ordered, but it takes about 3 weeks to come through.

so the service record and the RM record are different things?

Yes. The first is the Royal Marine service record of Charles Snr., the second is the Navy service record of Charles William.

Out of interest the medals issued to men on HMS Rodney were one of only four ships to receive their Crimea medals officially named. I've checked the list of known surviving medals, and Charles  name is not amongst them. However, in my own medal collection I have four such medals to men not on this list, so who knows it might still be held by another member of the family!

So I bought Charles Langtons Sr's service record from the NA online, and this is what is said:

Names in Full: Charles Langton
DOB: 7 July 1825
Place of Birth: Westbury, Berks (perhaps a mistake for Newbury)
Height: 5.8 (I think)
Hair: Sandy
Eyes: Blue
Complexion: not sure what is says
Wounds: None
Trade: not sure what is says
Ships Served in: Crocodile
Rating: Hospital Nurse
Period of Service: 1 Jan 73-15 May 78
Charachter: V.G.
Discharge: Shore (?)

So presumably he has a RM service record too, from before this period. How do i go about ordering that?
I'll look up his son Charles William's record in a moment.

Regarding the medals whereabouts - i'm looking into it and will let you know what I discover.

Best
Joel

I can't find Charles William Langtons service record? I did find Charles seniors from when he was a nurse. Before that he was a RM and you give the reference to that above.
Is Charles Williams available also? Perhaps not listed online but available to order?

Sorry if I got confused and am missing something obvious.

I have requested an estimate for Charles Langton's RM records: ADM 157/452

Joel

I am convinced I had found CW's service record, but in trying to find it again I'm unable too. I don't think the record you downloaded is either of your ancestors, for which I apologise if you have been sent on a wild goose chase.

I will continue to see if I can find again CW's record, and come back with a reference if I do.

No problem Martin.

The record we got for Charles Sr is, i am pretty sure, correct, my GG Grandfather. It would just be nice to find out more about CW as well, so if the record does turn up that would be great!

Thanks
Joel
