Hi,
If someone with access to the parish registers and/or monumental inscriptions for St. Saviours, Harome could look up the following for me, I'd appreciate it greatly:
John Wilson, buried 23 Sep 1869, age 50, St. Saviours, Harome.
I have no idea whether this is my missing John Wilson (there are so many!), but you never know.
Thanks.

Hi Janet & welcome
It's a little difficult for us to know if he is your missing, John Wilson too, his name is quite common. I have found the same info in a popular Burial Index.
Perhaps you could let us know a little more about him (if you have it), this will help to eliminate irrelevant John Wilson's.
Regards
Geoff

Hi Geoff,
I'm hoping the parish burial register provides more detail than the death certificate (which I have) but perhaps I'm dreaming.
My John Wilson has not left much of a trail....
Here's the little I know about him:
He married Jane Taylor, Jan. 24 1846 in the Parish Church in Helmsley. Both lived in Harome at the time. His occupation was listed on their marriage certificate as farmer. The curate was E. Day. They were of age (but their ages are not given). Jane Taylor, at least, was born in Harome.
John's father was John Wilson, farmer. Mary Wilson (perhaps his sister?) was a witness.
Jane Taylor was from a Quaker background (and perhaps John was too.) I believe Jane may have been related to Ann (Boyes) and Jonathan Taylor (of Harome). Jonathan Taylor (schoolteacher) was the other witness at their wedding.
They had five children who are to be found living in Harome with their mother in 1851 and 1861:
Mary Jane (b 1847 Harome)
Robert (b. 1848 Harome)
Anne (b. 1849 Harome)
John (b. 1851 Harome)
Elizabeth (b. 1861 Harome)
John is *not* at home during the 1851 or 1861 census.
In 1861, his occupation was listed as shepherd on Elizabeth's birth certificate.
Sometime between 1861 and 1871, I suspect Jane and John died as they're not to be found with any of their children or in the Helmsley district. In 1871, Elizabeth (age 10) and her older brother John are living with their sister Mary's family (Harker) in Rosedale. In 1881 Elizabeth was working as a kitchen maid at the hall in Kirby Misperton (close to her other sister Anne's (Marton) family).
Not much to go on, I'm afraid.

Hi Janet
Just to clarify, I don't have access to the registers or MI's
The popularity of the names still remains an issue, especially outside of Helmsley.
However, your theory of their deaths between 1861 and 1871 is very plausible. If this is the case then the 1869 death of John Wilson aged 50 looks very possible, there are only 2 or 3 more within that period in the Helmsley district:
Q1 1861, no age given. V 9d, P 261. Unlikely because in 1861 he was noted as a shepherd on Elizabeths' birth cert.
Q4 1866, aged 76. V 9d, P 251. Unlikely because first child would be born when he was 56, though not impossible.
Q4 1871, aged 66. V 9d, P 283. Unlikely because census had been taken, but still a chance.
I have found a death for a Jane Wilson: Q3 1862, no age given, Helmsley, bur/reg. V 9d, P 232.
There is a probably a good reason for John not being at home in 1851 and 1861, he was a farmer/shepherd, his residence may have been on the farm at that time, especially if he spent some weeks away at a time.
I haven't yet established any links for Jonathan Taylor or Ann Boyes; though it must be likely that Jonathan is a relative, as Mary Wilson may well be!
Hope you can get something from this.
Regards
Geoff

Hi Janet,
I think Jane Taylor is the illegitimate daughter of Deborah Taylor born 28/10/1806 Harome who is the daughter of Jonathan and Ann

Thanks for your ideas and info, Geoff and Lyn,
I've been thinking Jane Taylor could be Deborah Taylor's daughter too!
Especially since Deborah Ward, birthplace Harome, is listed as 'mother' visiting Jane in the 1851 census.
As for John, I'll keep my fingers crossed that somewhere, somehow there's a clue that will lead me to finding the 'right' one.

Hi Janet,
In the 1861 Census at West Newton Grange, Oswaldkirk is John Wilson aged 40 a married shepherd born Cawton, which I think is near Gilling and Helmsley.
You mentioned that John's father was also John Wilson and baptised 16/5/1820 at Gilling was John Wilson son of John and Jane Wilson
He might be worth considering

Hi Lyn,
Thanks so much for the tip on a 'married' John Wilson, shepherd, in Oswaldkirk. He could be the one!
I'll follow up on him and see where he leads me.

Hi Janet,
Good luck with your search - I hope he turns out to be your ancestor

I looked at the burial record for John Wilson at Harome on 23 Sept 1869, age 50. The only additional fact is that he was "of Harome".
Harome registers are listed at NYRO as 1600-1653 & 1678-1691 covering bapts, marrs & burs, 1863-1999 bapts, 1863-1978 marrs & 1863-2002 burials.
The microfilm for burials starts with an entry on 31 Oct 1863, prior to that (according to a member of staff at NYRO) the Harome burials were recorded with the Helmsley parish registers. I was unable to find a burial for Jane Wilson dying S1862 on the Helmsley burials microfilm. Also looked for her in the registers for Kirkbymoorside but there is a gap from 1858 to 1865.
There are a number of Wilson burials at Harome around that time:-
Joseph of Kirkbymoorside 29 Oct 1864 age 26
Emma of Harome 26 June 1865 age 26
Ann of Harome 29 July 1865 age 49
William of Harome 23 January 1866 age 85
Johanna of Kirkbymoorside 23 January 1869 age 18
Isaac of Harome 5 Sept 1869 age 72
Mary Alena of Harome 23 Oct 1872 age 2
Elizabeth of Harome 15 December 1874 age 58
Benjamin of Harome 8 May 1875 age 2
Tom of Harome 21 December 1875 age 3 weeks
Frederick William of Harome 25 June 1879 age 20
John of Harome 14 April 1884 age 69
Jane Elizabeth of Harome 18 August 1884 age 6 months
Annie of Harome 7 May 1887 age 51
(I stopped looking at end of 1887)
There are two marriages for Wilson girls at Harome - Sarah Hannah to Henry Horner on 31 Dec 1868 and Eliza to Thomas Dawson on 14 Oct 1884.
Some Wilson burials at Helmsley I noticed when looking for Jane:
Robert of [Huth?] 29 Oct 1862 age 27
Elizabeth of East Moors 13 Nov 1862 age 28
Christopher of Pockley 15 Nov 1862 age 25
Mary of Brandsby 27 Nov 1862 age 49
Probably none of these will fit into your Wilson line, but may be of use to someone else!

Thanks so much for looking this up for me!
This John Wilson and the John Wilson who was shepherd at West Newton Grange (in 1851 and 1861 census) are, I strongly believe, one and the same.
Now to track down the inquest report in the newspaper of the time. :-)
