Hi Steve,

My name is Sonia Anne Patricia Bate.  My name here is sbate.  I read your message today, October 20/05.  I believe I may have some family tree info for you.  My great, great grandfather was Sir Henry Newell Bate.  He came to Ottawa, and St. Catharines, Ontario with his father who was Henry Bate of Trennick House, Truro, Cornwall.  Henry Bate died at the age of 52 years in England around mid 1800's.  His father was Sir William Bate of Trennick House.  I am working from my office this night, but at home I have our full family tree which goes back to the 1700's and is full of many of our Bate ancestors and their offspring.

I wonder if your parents are John and Margaret Bate?  I have collected much of our family history over the years and am continuing this search.  Please get back to me.

Hello!

I am currently researching the Bate family (originally of Trennick House, Truro, Cornwall, England).  My great-uncle William Coristine married Sir Henry Newell’s Bates’ granddaughter (daughter of his son Henry Allan Bate) Morna Allan Bate; Sir Henry “gave her away” at her wedding (June 1912) in the All Saints Church which he built.

I understand from the partial Bate family tree posted, that Sir Henry’s father – also a Henry Newell Bate – immigrated with his family to St. Catherine’s Ontario in 1833, and died in England in 1842, the same year as his (third) wife died in Canada. Since Sir Henry would have been 14 at the time I was wondering how he and his (younger?) siblings managed to survive on their own in Canada...

From (online) Ontario birth/marriage/death records (as well as several of the online Canadian censuses) I have been able to find most of the birthdates, dates of marriage and children’s birthdates for many Sir Henry’s eleven children (by Catherine Cameron).  These are as follows:

1) Gerald (born Sept. 15, 1853), married Katherine Cameron (same name as his mother) 1881. (Children: Marjorie, b. 1883, Stewart b. 1894 and Aldous, born 1898);
2) Margaret (born March, 1855, died Nov 16, 1918), married Alec Christie (1845-1893). (Children: Harry, b. 1878, Margaret, b.1880, Evelyn Fay b. c. 1882 and Katie b. 1887);
3) Minnie (dates unknown), married Montague Aldous 1882. (Children: Ethel, Gerald b. 1885, Allan 1886, Henry, b. 1888 and Doris b. 1896);
4) Henry Allan (born May 12, 1857, died date unknown), married Florence Mary Wilson (born 1859, died date unknown) in unknown date. (Children: James Montague b. 1882, Morna Allan b. July 1, 1884, d. 1964, Claudia Bowman b. 1885, Henry Trennick, b. 1894 and Winnifred, b. 1899);
5) Thomas (born. 1859), married Mary Stuart Cameron (Children: Irene, Henry N., b. 1892, Allan Cameron, b. 1889 & Donald b. date unknown);
6) Katie (born 1863), married Lansing Lewis 1887 (Children: Mostyn, b. 1889 and Gwen 1893);
7) Frank (born c. 1866) married Frances (surname unknown, date unknown). (No children).
8) Daisy (born 1868, drowned aged 13 at Thurso, Quebec, Aug. 5, 1881)
9) Harold (b. date unknown, married? Died date unknown).
10) Llewelyn (born Aug 10, 1875) married Dorothy Maud Walters 1912 (Children: Katherine, Cecil, Lorraine and Phyllis).
11) Claudia (born June 8, 1875) married Barrett Dewar 1900 (Children: Gordon, b. 1904, Jack, b. 1907 and Ian, b. 1910).

I have so far been unable to discover the dates of death for all but two of the children and have not been able discover any dates for one of the daughters, Mary Agnes (a.k.a. “Minnie” Bate), and one of the sons, Harold Bate.

I would very much appreciate any information relating to Sir Henry Newell Bate and his children.

Sincerely,
Cynthia C

  :)Hello Cynthia,
This is a wonderful surprise.  I am a great great grandaughter of Sir Henry Newell Bate (Ottawa).  I have collected much information on my family over the years and do have in my possession several articles, 2 family trees and a lot of family "folklore".

I would be very interested in helping you fill in the blanks.

My father was Donald Cameron Bate Jr. born October 23, 1928.  Deceased April 7, 1981.
His father was Donald Cameron Bate Sr. Born December 19, 1903.  Deceased 1975
His father was Thomas Cameron Bate - deceased 1938 Ottawa
His father was Sir Henry Newell Bate - deceased April 7, 1917 Ottawa

My father introduced me to my great  aunts Morna, Louise and Marjorie.  I visited them frequently - especially Aunt Louise (married to Allan C. Bate) as he was raised by them after his parents divorced.

I corresponded with My great great Aunt Gyneth Lewis (Montreal).  She graciously gave to me many articles and artifacts from the past generation and their many accolades.

My father had 2 brothers:  Paul Newell Bate deceased 2006 and Robert Cameron Bate
deceased 1991 (Ottawa)

I am very interested in acquiring historical date regarding my ancestors.  Sir Henry Newell Bate's father, Also named Henry Newell Bate did return to England.  I have a baptismal record from St. Agnes Parish showing other children's births.

Now, I also know that HIS father, William Bate was an Earl.  He married Jenny Thornton Bate.

I would like as much information on this family and the Trennick family line.  Our family tree shows "Bate of Trennick House" Truro, Cornwall.  I know that this place was torn down recently in Truro however the street is still named Trennick and the gates remaln.

I very much wish to come to England for more information.

I know that we have a direct lineage to the Stuart line and also the Bate castle ruins in Northumberland.

If you can help me with any of this I would be so appreciative.

Sincerely,

Sonia Bate (Swallow)

I am new to this and my last post did'nt appear on this thread.I am the gx6 of William Bate and Jenny Thornton Bate and also have a copy of the Trennick House Tree. I have been able to verify a lot of the info in it with searches. However I have drawn a complete blank with William apart from finding a marriage record for 1783 and a brief mention of him in some archive material from the West Briton newspaper. I realise that the last post on this thread was a long time ago but wonder if Sonia has found out anything more...we must be cousins of some description!

Hello Sonia: I see that the posts here are quite old. Are you still active on this chat? I am a descendant of William Bate and Jane Thornton. I'm interested in learning more about what information you have to share.
