Trying to find birth for Gilbert Robson in Canada poss 1915/1916 to above parents. Gilbert b1874 in Scotland married Mary Bell Short in Scotland in 1892 and I believe went to Canada after 1911. There are a Gilbert and Mary Robson returning to the UK in 1919 with dau Isabell and son Gilbert.
Anyone help please with birth and hopefully confirmation of Marys maiden name???????

Unfortunately, births in Canada are protected by privacy laws ... in the case of Manitoba, where the family appears to be living at the time of Gilbert's birth, has closure for births for 100 years and he doesn't yet seem to be in the public index here ...
http://vitalstats.gov.mb.ca/Query.php
1916 Manitoba Census
at 1619 Ross St Winnipeg
Gilbert Robson 43 b. Scotland
Mary B 46 b. Scotland
Elizabeth 22 b. Scotland
George 19 b. Scotland ...Overseas with the CEF I'll see if i can find this record in a bit)
Archie 15 b. Scotland Isabel 10 b. Scotland
Gilbert 8/12 b. Manitoba
They arrived from Scotland in 1911.
You may find marriage info for the older children at the above website ... restriction for marriages is only 80 years.

Gilbert arrived in May 1911 on the Cassandra and his family followed arriving August 1911 on the Saturnia.
Gilbert and Mary Bell returned from England Sep 1919 on the Melita.
A marriage certificate from Manitoba for one of the children should confirm the maiden name of the mother.

There is a death record for a Gilbert Robson in British Columbia in 1950 with info that matches what you have given here so s/b your Gilbert? From familysearch.org (hopefully) at this link ... just type in his name.

I was not able to turn up a CEF record for George ... The Canadian National Archives website does not appear to have any viewable records for any of the George Robsons in their database ... have no idea why ... perhaps they are working in things or something and records will return later.

Polarbear - thanks for all this and yes this looks like the family. I believe that both Gilbert and Mary cam back to the UK in June 1919 for some reason. The destination address given in Scotland is for the Short family in Edinburgh. It seems to have been a very short stay.

In the Tuesday, 19 May 1925 edition of the Winnipeg Free Press there is a notice regarding the marriage of Archibald Robson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Robson to Mabel Johnson the previous Friday.
The Thursday, 1 Dec 1932 edition of the Free Press has an announcement regarding the marriage of Isabelle Robson, youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Robson to Gordon Thomas. The marriage occurred the previous Saturday.
There is a mention in the 4 Aug 1928 edition of the Free Press that the dog of Gilbert Robson (the younger) won a "smartest pet" competition at the Weston playgrounds. :) There is a picture (not very good quality) of Gilbert and his dog. If you would like a copy of the newspaper page please PM me your email address and I can send it to you.
There is a photo of Gilbert and Mary Robson in the 31 Dec 1946 edition of the Free Press that is accompanied by a paragraph indicating they were celebrating their Golden Anniversary in their new home in Vancouver. It also indicates Gilbert had worked at the Weston shops of the Canadian Pacific Railway for 30 years. Family members mentioned were Mrs. Edwin Bingley of Vancouver, George Robson serving with the Duke of York Royal Canadians, Archie Robson of Winnipeg, Mrs. Gordon Thomas of Winnipeg and youngest son Gilbert was serving overseas in the Royal Canadian Navy. Again I can send you a copy of this page if you would like it.
Here is a link to the 1919 incoming Canadian passenger list for the Melita (Robson family starts on line 14):

and here's a link to the passenger list for the Cassandra from 1911 (Gilbert was travelling ahead of the rest of the family and is on line 20):
http://data2.collectionscanada.gc.ca/e/e143/e003568162.jpg
The rest of the family arrived in Montreal on 6 Aug 1911 on the Saturnia (starting on line 5):

I was not able to turn up a CEF record for George ... The Canadian National Archives website does not appear to have any viewable records for any of the George Robsons in their database ... have no idea why ... perhaps they are working in things or something and records will return later.
I'm wondering if he is not in the database because he was a career military man.

There is an obituary for Gilbert Robson in the Monday, 17 Jul 1950 edition of the Free Press. It indicates he died in Vancouver on 16 Jul 1950. He was survived by his wife Mary, 3 sons - George (of Vancouver), Archie and Gilbert Jr. (both of Winnipeg) and by two daughters - Mrs. E. Bingley (of Vancouver) and Mrs. G. Thomas (of Winnipeg).
The 9 Oct 1953 edition of the Free Press has a birth announcement for the son of Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Robson. The baby was born on 8 Oct and it makes mention that it was a "birthday present for father".
It looks like Mary Bell Robson returned to Winnipeg after Gilbert's death as their is a death notice in the 24 Apr 1953 edition of the Free Press which indicates she died that day at her residence in Winnipeg.
Gilbert Robson (Jr) died 1 Nov 1999 at Deer Lodge Hospital in Winnipeg. Like his father, he also worked for the CPR. He was also in the Royal Canadian Navy for 5 years. He was survived by his wife (Joyce) and by 2 sons and 1 daughter. His wife, Joyce, died in 2005 and here's a link to her obituary at the Free Press website: http://www.rootschat.com/links/0ohi/
I hope you aren't offended by this but is anyone else wondering whether Gilbert Jr. may actually have been Elizabeth's child? With Mary being 45 when he was born and there being a 10 year gap between his birth and Isabelle's, I can't help but wonder...

Since Roots Chat doesn't give out personal information, I don't know who I'm talking to.
I have all the printed records of all the items listed here, right to the address where Gilbert and Mary Belle Short lived in Galashiels before immigrating to Canada.
From what I have read, it is all correct.
As for George Robson, he did have an interesting life. I have a picture of him with wife Lucy.
He apparently lied about his age to get into the service for WW1, then lied about it again to serve in WW2. One note in my mother's list of family information was that he was wounded at Dieppe.
I can not find any service record or death information.
