John Serjeantson BRAITHWAITE was born 15 Oct 1864 in Rock Ferry, Cheshire, England. Son of John Henry BRAITHWAITE.
I would like to know if there is some way of knowing when and where he arrived in Australia. First record I have of him is marriage to Phoebe Josephine BAKER (daughter of Samuel BAKER) in Southern Cross, West Australia on 22 July 1894.
He was still there on 31 January, 1902, when my Grandmother was born at Murrin Murrin, West Australia.
He then moved to Tasmania at some stage, then on to South Yarra in Melbourne, but I am not sure where to look to confirm all this.
Any help appreciated.
Thanks,
Peter Mitchell

Have you checked for him on the UK Census for 1871, 1881 & 1891?
This often gives some indication of when they may have emigrated.
Do you have his 1932 death certificate? This usually shows the length of time they have lived here.

1871 Census - John's father had been widowed.
1881 John was a boarder at Farnham Grammar School.
John could have landed at any state in Aus and been attracted to the goldfields in the early 1890's. As Merlin suggested, his death certificate would help you as it should show his years in Aus and in each state.

Obituary for SAMUEL BAKER which seems to confirm the second marriage at the age of about 84. It also says he had been in the region for many years.

None of which brings you closer to BRAITHWAAITE's arrival, but may give interesting background if you do not already have it.

Hi all, thanks to everyone helping with this, I am amazed where all this info comes from. There's lots of stuff here especially to do with the BAKER side of the family, which had come to a bit of a halt. I'm supposed to go out tonite, but it's tempting to stay in and put this all together. I will over the weekend though, and get back to this post . Many thanks. :)

According to this story, the second marriage was not very successful. There is an interesting description of the second wife.

Aussie 1947
1924 in Melbourne, Victoria
John Serjeantson Braithwaite is registered at 22 David St, South Yatrra, Engine Driver
Josephine Braithwaite is registered at 74 Moore St South Yarra on Home Duties.
This would have to be them.
Why would they have had 2 different addresses in South Yarra? Did people separate in those days?

Cando …. Have got Death Certificate for John Serjeantson BRAITHWAITE. Died 21/9/1932. Occupation Hotel Keeper.
Aged 67 Years ( ie born 1865). Father – John Henry BRAITHWAITE, occupation ship’s chandler. Mother maiden name Serjeantson.
Born Cheshire, England, been 10 years in Victoria and 11 years in Tasmania. (no mention of West Australia)
Married at age 29 years ( ie 1894) in Southern Cross, Western Australia to Phoebe Josephine BAKER (deceased).
Children Raymond (deceased) and Dorothy (30 years).
So from this moved from Tasmania to Victoria in 1921, and to Tasmania in 1911.
Still doesn’t help where and when he came to Australia, although you say he was a boarder at Farnham Grammar school in 1881.
So, assume he came to Australia between 1881 and 1894 (when married in West Australia.
