Title: Pubs in Preston
Post by: Pubsinpreston on Thursday 05 July 12 10:49 BST (UK)
I have recently assembled 10 years research into historic inns, taverns and beer-houses that have existed in the old borough of Preston, onto a blog. Apart from the mere fact of recording a part of Preston's social history, I saw it as an opportunity to provide a resource for Family Historians, as well as others, to trace a part of their family's history that they perhaps didn't know about. Records from censuses and records of 'Mine Hosts' are as complete as I am able. However, like most old jigsaws, there are a lot of pieces missing. My hope is that descendants of those involved, or anyone else who knows, can help to find those pieces.

In the first four months after the launch of the site, I have been astounded by the response that I have already had - new information, photographs, and many other contributions have been made to it by interested visitors.

Share your knowledge with others, so that they may add to it in due course, thus enhancing your own knowledge.

It's a bit like a bank account - you can't expect to make withdrawals unless you've already made a deposit. Well that's the way it used to be, and the way things are going, we may have to return to that good practice!

Interesting site. I can give one tidbit from my research. This is the brother of one of my ancestors. Their family was from Fermanagh in Ireland and probably arrived in Preston during the great lock out of 1853.
From the national probate calendar there's:

COLWELL James of the Bay Horse Inn North-road Preston Lancashire died 10 September 1919 Administration London 7 October to Sarah Colwell widow. Effects £612 14s 2d.

Thanks for that. That's just the sort of record that doesn't appear in public. I've assumed from what you said, that he was still at the Bay Horse when he died. He must have only been there 2 years maximum, although there's nothing unusual about that.

Regards.....Steve

The Colwells were at the North Star in Great George Street from 1910 - 12. I've just picked up the 1911 census record for them and updated the site.
